 What is international social work?

 International social work is generally understood to encompass global social problems and policy issues,
comparative social policy, international professional organizations, social work practice focused on
development of human rights, or migration, especially that in international agencies. It is potentially a vast
subject area if one considers international social work to include comparative and global perspectives on each
area of social work expertise and concern.
 International Social Work is the official journal of the International Association of Schools of Social Work
(IASSW), the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW) and the International Federation of Social
Workers (IFSW).
International Association of School of Social Work (IASSW)
 The IASSW promotes the development of social work education throughout the world, develops
standards to enhance the quality of social work education, encourages international exchange,
provides forums for sharing social work research and scholarship, and promotes human rights and
social development through policy and advocacy activities.

International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW)

 ICSW’s basic mission is to promote forms of social and economic development, which aim to reduce
poverty, hardship, and vulnerability throughout the world, especially amongst disadvantaged people.
It strives for recognition and protection of fundamental rights to food, shelter, education, health care
and security.
 International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW).
The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is the global body for the
profession. The Federation and its national members strive for social justice, human
rights and inclusive, sustainable social development through the promotion of social
work best practice and engagement in international cooperation.
 Primary Goals
 The major focus of International Social Work is on the interaction between processes of globalization and
the development of social welfare at national level, as well as social work and community development
locally.
 International social work is a discrete field of practice within social work that seeks to improve the social
and material well-being of people everywhere.
 The realization of new social arrangements that accelerate the pace of development and assure the
satisfaction of basic needs of people everywhere.
 International Social Work provides information on current international developments in education and
training relevant to social work, social welfare and community development.
 The transformation of societies toward more humanistic values based on social justice, the promotion of
peace, and the attainment of the fullest possible human development.
 Functions
 International social workers help eliminate barriers to development for populations experiencing
disadvantages. They work to protect human rights and ease economic stress for vulnerable
communities. They help ensure basic needs are met and assist in liberating oppressed people.
 International social work extends beyond the needs of the people in our country and looks at people
around the world that need help.
 International social work not only examines emergent need but also evaluates everyday problems that
people in other countries endure.
 International social work promotes social change where necessary. helps to solve problems in human
relationships and enhances the well being of people's lives.
