Currently CRIS is able to offer ESL classes in person and online.

2. Sajida has 3 levels of classes for Afghan women. Her classes are
full, and are limited to Afghan women. Some conditions apply, so
talk to Sajida or me about adding women.

Aspire Classes are offered by
the Ohio Department of
Education in most Ohio
Counties. They are free, good
quality, and are taught by
professional teachers. The
focus is on functional English
and survival skills.
1. Franklin County Aspire Classes (Godman Guild)

Godman Guild runs Aspire ESL Classes at Franklin County Locations at the Karl Road Library,
Whitehall Library and Riverview International Center.

Students can register anytime at www.godmanguild.org. They now offer rolling admission so they can test and
place people, and students can join the classes at anytime.

Karl Road and Whitehall Libraries have in person Classes: M/W or T/Th, 9 AM-12 PM.
Godman Guild also offers online classes: M/W or T/Th, 5PM-8PM.
Godman Guild offers classes at Riverview International Center from 9-12 on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings. (552 Riverview Drive, Apt. B)
2. Columbus City Schools Aspire Classes Lexington Avenue in Linden-The Aspire Program at Lexington Avenue
usually offers free daytime ESL classes, evening ESL classes and GED classes.

English as a Second Language

ESL classes improve English language skills in the areas of Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing and Basic Citizenship. All adults are welcome, although
F-1 visa holders may not attend classes.

There are 3 steps to enroll in ASPIRE classes: 1) Apply on the Student Registration Portal 2) Attend an information session (dates listed below), 3)

Aspire has ESL classes in Hilliard
ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) helps non-native English speakers improve reading, writing,
listening, and speaking skills in English. ESOL classes are FREE, but students must attend an orientation session to
enroll in class.

5. Vineyard Columbus Community Center
Vineyard Columbus Community Center has free volunteer-taught ESOL Classes
on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30. On-site childcare is available.

There are also conversation practice sessions on Fridays from 10-11:30, but no
childcare is available.

Fall Term begins September 17, 2022.

6.Conversation Buddies or Classes assist ESL learners to improve their speaking skills. ESL learners and tutors meet
at libraries and other public locations convenient to them.

Basic English Classes at the CSCC Language Institute


are a great option for students who want to pursue a
degree or certificate. Eight week courses are $190.
Placement tests and registration for the next session
will begin at the beginning of October. The focus is on
grammar, reading, writing and spelling to prepare
students for academic work.
8. Students who speak excellent English can apply for financial aid, and take the placement test to see if
they can go directly to college if they have that goal.

9. Muslim Family Services of Ohio has Two Women’s Only Classes.

September 27th and 29th, and classes will begin on October 4th.

14. Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services (ETSS) Currently Zoom only during the days (eastside family literacy classes
for Afghan families they’ve resettled)
