Power Factor Correction
Power Factor Correction

• Power factor correction is done to reduce the apparent power consumption of the
electrical power system.
Power Factor Correction

• Ex 01: An RL series circuit consists of a resistance of 15 Ω and an inductor that

has an inductive reactance of 26 Ω. If a current of 5 amperes flows around the
circuit, calculate:

i) The supply voltage.

ii) The phase angle between the supply voltage and circuit current.
iii) Draw the resulting phasor diagram.
iv) Calculate the active, reactive power, and apparent power.
Power Factor Correction

• Ex 02: A coil has a resistance of 10 Ω and an inductance of 46 mH. If it draws a

current of 5 Amperes when connected to a 100 Vrms, 60 Hz supply, calculate:

i) The voltages across the components.

ii) The phase angle of the circuit.
iii) The different powers consumed by the series RL circuit.
iv) Calculate the required capacity of the capacitor bank to increase the power
factor to 0.95.
