DEFINITION AND FUNCTION
Low voltage fuses protect against
electrical fault by opening the
circuits in low voltage systems and
are commonly used for a variety of
applications, typically fuses with a
voltage rating less than or equal to
1500 V.
Low voltage fuse is the simplest of all over
current protection devices with a circuit-opening
fusible part that heated and severed by the
passage of the overcurrent through it.
Types of low voltage fuse
1.) Rewirable fuse, is type of LV fuse that almost
used in small applications such as wiring in the
house, small-scale industries, and other tiny
current applications. These types of fuses two
essential parts where those are a fuse base,
which has two terminals like in and out.
2.) Cartridge fuse, has entirely closed
containers and metal contact as well, the
applications of this fuse mainly include low
voltage (LV), high voltage (HV) and small fuses,
this is a fast type of safety device used to
protect cables, power lines, equipments against
overload and short circuit.
3.) Drop out fuse, in this fuse type fuse
melting creates the elements to drop down
gravity regarding to it's minimal assistance.
These kinds of fuses are employed for
safeguarding external transformers
4.) Striker fuse, is employed for tripping and
dosing the electrical circuit. These fuses are
having plenty of force as well as displacement
and provided with a spring-loaded striker that act
as a visual indicator that the fuse has blown and
also activate other switchgear.
5.) Switch fuse, is compact combination,
generally metal enclosed of a switch and a fuse.
It is very widely used for low and medium
voltages.
Principle of low voltage fuse
Is based on the "heating effect of
current". Whenever a short circuit, over
current or mismatched load connection
occurs, the thin wire inside the fuse melts
because of the heat generated by the heavy
current flowing through it. Therefore it
disconnects the power supply supply from
the connected system.
Characteristics of low voltage
fuse
1.) Fuse type, are identified by 2 letters,
according to their application category. In
low voltage installation gG and aM fuses
are mainly used.
2.) Rated currents and voltages,
the rated current can cross a fuse
indefinitely without triggering either
fusing or any excessive temperature
rise. The rated voltage is the voltage
at which this fuse can be used.
3.) Conventional non-fusing and fusing
currents.

• Conventional non-fusing current(Inf),

this is the current value that the fuse
cartridge can withstand for a conventional
time without melting.
• Conventional fusing current(If), this is
the current value that causes the fuse
cartridge to fuse before the conventional
time has elapsed..
4.)Operating zone, the standards is used
to determined the operating time of the
fuse according to the current crossing it.
5.) Breaking capacity, the capacity must be at
least equal to the prospective short-circuit
current that may occur at the part at which the
fuse is installed. The higher the breaking
capacity, the more capable the fuse of protecting
the installation against high intensity short-
circuit.
6.) Limitation curve, the limitation of the
current can very according to the
conditions of the short circuit (intensity, cos
Theta, short-circuit starting angle. The
limitation curves of cartridges represent the
maximum limited current values that can be
achieved under the mist unfavorable
conditions.
7.) Limited thermal stress, a short circuit
triggers the release of a considerable
amount of energy. The fuse cartridge limits
this energy to a much lower value,
conventionally known as the limited thermal
stress, express in A^2s.
8.) Selectivity, a current generally crosses
a number of protection devices in series.
These device are calculates and distributed
according to the various circuits to be
protected. There is selectivity when only the
device protective the faulty circuit operates.
APPLICATIONS OF LOW
VOLTAGE FUSE

• RESIDENTIAL AND HOUSEHOLD

• ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
• EXTERNAL TRANSFORMER PROTECTION
• SMALL MOTOR PROTECTION
• AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
• HOME APPLIANCES
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
• it affords the current limiting effect under short
circuit conditions
• easy to removable for replacement without any
damage to coming into contact with a live part.
• fuse has the ability to interrupt enormous short
circuits without producing noise, flame or smoke
• the operate time of fuse can be much smaller
than the operation of the circuit breaker.
Disadvantages
• During short circuit or overload once fuse
blows off replacing of fuse takes time.
During this period the circuit lost power

• The protection of fuse is not reliable.

• Low breaking capacity.

• Fuse is slow compared to circuit

breakers. It is a slow speed.
