Introductio
n
 EL FILIBSTERISMO also known by its
alternative English title The Reign of Greed, is
the second novel written by Philippine National
Hero Jose Rizal. It is the sequel to Noli Me
Tangere and like the first book, was written in
Spanish. It was first published in 1891 in Ghent.
 Rizal’s had a profound effect on society in terms
of views about national identity, the catholic
faith and its influence on the filipino’s choice,
and the government’s issues, the issues related
to the effect of colonization on people’s lives
and cause for independence.
El Fili’s
Discription
 Started the second novel as early as October 1887 while he was still in Calamba
and continued writing in London, Paris, Madrid and Biarritz.
 The Manuscript was completed on March 29, 1891
 Rizal suffered hardship in saving money for the printing and publishing of El
Filibusterismo in Ghent.
 VALENTIN VENTURA sent him necessary funds to finish the printing of El
Filibusterismo.
 On September 18, 1891: El Filibsterismo cae off the press.
 He sent two copies to HongKong; One for Jose Basa and the other to Sixto
Lopez while the original manuscript was given to Ventura with his autograph, in
appreciation of their help.
Filibustero Defined
 The word Filibuster is title known in the Philippines.
GOMBURZA
 The book was dedicated to the three secular priest: Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora.
 The publication of these two novels cased the political
leadership in the Philippines to see Rizal as an enemy of the
state.
El Filibusterismo in
 Chrisostomo Ibarra is back and as Simoun. Drin the period in between

the story line of Noli Me Tanger and El Filibusterismo which is 13
years, Ibarra left the philippines and become a wealthy jeweler.
 According to Simoun, the lamp will stay lighted for only 20 mintes
