The MASS of an object is a measure of its INERTIA.

It has the same value anywhere in the universe.

UNIT: Kg

The WEIGHT of an object is the FORCE of gravity

pulling down on the object. It varies at different places
in the universe depending on the strength of gravity.

UNIT: N

F = ma
Fweight = mg

g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s²)

Example:

A person having a mass of 70

kg, has a weight of 686 N.

Since:

Weight = m g

= 70 x 9.8

= 686 N

Example

A light, inextensible string passing over a smooth fixed

pulley connects particles of masses 50 g and 100 g.
The particles hang freely and are released from rest.
Find the acceleration and the tension in the string.
Question

A 5.0 kg and a 2.0 kg mass are connected by a

light inextensible string passing over a
frictionless pulley of negligible mass. If the two
are released from rest, how long will it take the
5.0 kg mas to fall 2.0 m?
Aim
To find a relationship between acceleration
and mass.
