Jose Joya
Jose Joya ( 1931-1995)
- A Filipino painter best known for his Abstract Expressionist works which utilized a variety of
techniques, including controlled drips, impasto strokes, and transparent layering.

- His works are often inspired by the tropical wildlife of his home country, they are painted with
bold, vibrant colors.

-He attended the University of the Philippines in 1953. He later pursued a graduate degree at the
Cranbrook School of Art in Michigan on a Fulbright Smith-Mundt scholarship.

- Jose Joya was awarded numerous first place prizes at the many exhibits he entered and even his
passing he continued to be honored by receiving the title of National Artist For Visual Arts in
2003, by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, for his significant contributions to the
development of Filipino fine art awareness and for his generous teachings to his fellow Filipino
artists.
Notable Artworks The Hills of Nikko (1964)
- This artwork is the artist’s interpretation of one of the existing hills in
Nikko.

- During wintertime, the hill’s imperfections are covered with snow.


During summertime, those imperfections are expressed by the artists in
terms of bold brush strokes.

- The painting is actually a symbol of human imperfections.

- The earth colors symbolize the weaknesses and limitations of humanity.

- The greens and blues represent life and hope.

- The white background represents the snow that starts to envelop the
hills.

Ang Kiukok
Ang Kiukok (1931-2005)
-Studied in University of Santo Thomas (1952-1954). In where Vicente Manansala was his
primary mentor.

-First one-man show at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1954.

-Rewarded as the country’s National Artist in 2001.

-Won numerous awards like Outstanding Citizen Award in 1976 and Patnubay ng Sining at
Kalinangan Award in 1978

-Known for his fused cubism, surrealism, and expressionism style.

-Often chose dynamic or disturbing subject matters.

Jeremias Elizalde Navarro
Jeremias Elizalde Navarro (1924-1999)
- He was a painter and a sculpture

- As a painter, he created both abstract and figure paintings using oil and watercolor. His
figure paintings were inspired by Balinese art and culture.

- As a sculpture, he was popular for his masks, carved in hardwood with combined features
of human and animal.

- He studied in University of Santo Tomas and he finished a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts
Major in Painting in 1951.

- His most notable award is the National Artist Award for Painting in 1999.
