What is Data Science?
Theories and techniques from many fields and disciplines are used to
investigate and analyze a large amount of data to help decision makers
in many industries such as science, engineering, economics, politics,
finance, and education
 Computer Science
 Pattern recognition, visualization, data warehousing, High
performance computing, Databases, AI
 Mathematics
 Mathematical Modeling
 Statistics
 Statistical and Stochastic modeling, Probability.
DATA SCIENCE
1. An area that manages, manipulates, extracts, and
interprets knowledge from tremendous amount of data

2. Data science (DS) is a multidisciplinary field of study

with goal to address the challenges in big data

3. Data science principles apply to all data – big and small

DATA SCIENCE
DATA SCIENTISTS
 Data scientists are the key to realizing the
opportunities presented by big data. They bring
structure to it, find compelling patterns in it, and
advise executives on the implications for
products, processes, and decisions.

 A data scientist is an analytics professional who

is responsible for collecting, analyzing and
interpreting data to help drive decision-making in
an organization. The data scientist role combines
elements of several traditional and technical jobs,
including mathematician, scientist, statistician
and computer programmer.
What do Data Scientists do?
 National Security
Data science at the National Security Agency (NSA) is a multi-disciplinary field that uses
elements of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and application-specific
knowledge to gather, make, and communicate principled conclusions from data.
 Cyber Security
Companies often use cyber security data science for threat detection and analysis. They
analyze information about a system to discover patterns and anomalies that may be
signs of a potential cyber threat. For example, they may identify attack surfaces or
parts of the security system that are at risk of a breach.
 Business Analytics
A data scientist, will extract, analyse and interpret amounts of data from a range of
sources, using algorithmic, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning and
statistical tools, to make it accessible to businesses.
Data Scientists Skills
 Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

 Applied Statistics/Data Analysis

 Solid Programming Skills (R, Python, Julia, SQL)

 Data Mining

 Data Base Storage and Management

 Machine Learning and discovery

information, and information into
insight.”
