Practical Electrical Wiring
A single set of wires brings electric power from the power supplier’s line into the house. Inside the house,
wires are run to each outlet, where power is to be used. The wiring to a group of outlets, and in many cases
to a single outlet, is called “branch circuit”. Using numerous branch circuits has some advantages as it
results in the fact that an entire building is never in complete darkness on account of a blown fuse expect
on the rare occasions when a main fuse blows. Also, another advantage is that the greater the number of
circuits, the lower the voltage drop will be in each circuits, with less wasted power, and greater efficiency,
brighter lights, toasters that heat quicker, percolators that make coffee faster, and so on .

-Design requirements

1) Number of branch circuits to be installed

2) Size of wire used
3) The circuit breaker ratings 4) The sockets and lamp locations
Kinds of branch circuits in the apartment
1) Light circuits
2) Socket circuits

-Standards
C.B. or fuses : 10, 15, 20, 25, 32, 40, 63 A
Sockets : 2, 5, 6, 10, 16, 25 A
Cross section of wire : 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 16 mm2
Incandescent lamp : 40, 50, 60, 100, 150, 200 W
Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm), 40W(120cm)

Notes
- In practice, actually no wires less than 2mm2 are used.
- Power factor for incandescent lamp is 1.
- Power factor for fluorescent lamp is 0.6.
- Diversity in generation, transmission and distribution facilities
(low expenses).
1) Bedroom - 3.9*5.1

2) Bedroom – 3.8*3.6

3) Bedroom – 3.9*3.6

4)Bathroom – 1.8*2.1

5)Hall – 4.9*6.2

6)Kitchen – 4.1*3.9

7) Bedroom – 3.9*3.6

8) Entrance – 2.8*1.2
Calculation the required lux, wattage, lamps for each area of

1- Bed Room
(1) Lux = 150
Area = 3.9× 5.1= 19.89 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 150 × 19.89 = 596.7 Watt
Actual Wattage = 600W
No. of lamps = 30lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)

2- Bed Room
(1) Lux = 150
Area = 3.8× 3.6= 13.68 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 150 × 13.68 = 410.4Watt
Actual Wattage = 420W
No. of lamps = 21lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)
3- Bed Room
(1) Lux = 150
Area = 3.9× 3.6= 14.04 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 150 × 14.04 = 421.2Watt
Actual Wattage = 440W
No. of lamps = 22lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)

4- Bathroom
(1) Lux = 300
Area = 1.8*2.1= 3.78m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 300 × 3.78 = 226.8Watt
Actual Wattage = 240W
No. of lamps = 12lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)
5- Hall
(1) Lux = 50
Area = 4.9*6.2= 30.38 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 50 × 30.38 = 303.8Watt
Actual Wattage = 320W
No. of lamps = 16lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)

6- Kitchen
(1) Lux = 300
Area = 4.1*3.9= 15.99 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 300 × 15.99 = 959.4Watt
Actual Wattage = 1000W
No. of lamps = 50lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)
7- Bedroom
(1) Lux =150
Area = 3.9*3.6= 14.04 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 150 × 14.04 = 421.2Watt
Actual Wattage = 440W
No. of lamps = 22lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)

8- Entrance
(1) Lux = 100
Area = 2.8*1.2= 3.36 m2
Required Wattage = 0.2 × Lux × Area = 0.2 × 50 × 3.36= 67.2Watt
Actual Wattage = 80W
No. of lamps = 4lamp
Lamp Wattage -Fluorescent lamp : 20W (60cm)
