● Water is a prime need of human being. The industrial development has seen a great use of water in various processes and contributed to the generation of wastewater on a large scale.
● The problem of wastewater from industries is rising day by day, wastewaters from industries are coloured ,which is mainly due to dyes used in the industries.
● These dyes can’t be removed through normal filtration process.

INTRODUCTION
The objective of the project is to conceptualize and hence fabricate a model of an adsorbent which can be used for the removal of dye from wastewaters
DYE:
● Dyes are coloured substances designed to give materials such as fabrics,
papers, or any colourable materials a hue.
● This is possible as dyes can attach themselves onto any amenable materials.
Dyes have been utilized by humans for over a thousand years for various
application

TYPES OF DYES:
● Natural Dye
● Synthetic Dye
NECESSITY TO REMOVE DYE:
● Dye-utilizing industries usually store dye effluents as industrial waste
after dyes have fulfilled their role in colouring materials.
● These wastes are then purged into the environmental water bodies
changing colourless clean water into contaminated coloured water
● Dye effluents mixed with natural water source produces a foul odour
besides creating an eye sore to people. Beginning with the aquatic
animals and plants, textile effluents can harm living things on land as
well
TREATMENT METHODS:

● Coagulation and flocculation

● Ion Exchange
● Membrane filtration
● Reverse osmosis
● Adsorption
● Nanofiltration and ultrafiltration
ADSORPTION:
Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions,or molecules from a gas, liquid,or
dissolved solid to a surface. This process creates a film of the adsorbate on the
surface of the adsorbent
Adsorption is a consequence of surface energy
Factors Influencing Adsorption:
● Surface area of the adsorbent.
● Temperature.
● Pressure.
● Nature of the adsorbate and adsorbent.
● Presence of other substances.
DYE REMOVAL THROUGH ADSORPTION:

● Among the numerous tried and tested dye removal methods,

adsorption (physical method) emerged as one of the preferred
technique of dye removal due to its outstanding ability to remove
almost any type of dyestuff. This method can even be used to purify
industrial wastewater or to clean drinking water
● The one disadvantage this method had was its high cost of adsorbents
but with the discovery of cheap but equally efficient adsorbents, this
method rose to become an economical method of dye removal
worldwide.
FACTORS AFFECTING ADSORPTION:

The adsorption method works efficiently on an industrial scale as

well as laboratory scale. The rate of adsorption depends on the
parameters affecting the adsorption process such as
● the adsorbent dosage,
● the dye concentration,and
● the PH of solution.
Changes in any of the five parameters will affect the rate of
adsorption.
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT:
PREPARATION OF THE SAMPLE:

● Collecting the sugarcane bagasse from the market.

● Cut it into small pieces and sun dried it for 4 days .
● Dried in oven the sample for almost 100% moisture removal.
● Separation of them according to their particle size, 425μm, 150μm,
75μm.
TESTING THE SAMPLE:
● Preparation of the methylene blue stock solution (1000 ppm) .
● Then dilute the stock solution in different ppms (10, 20, 30, 50 ppm) .
● Adsorbents (of different sizes) at different doses (diff conc ; 0.5 g/L, 0.75 g/L, 1 g/L,
1.25 g/L, 1.5 g/L, 2 g/L) are measured .
● Addition of the samples in the Methylene Blue solutions.
● In a 1 liter beaker 500ml of Methyl blue solution is taken and the given dose of
adsorbent is added at different experiments .
● Stirred the solution in the magnetic stirrer
● Take the samples out from the solution at different time interval (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30,
60, 90, 120) mins with the help of pipet .
● Filter the collected samples with the help of syringe filter .
● Find the adsorption value of the samples with the help of UV Spectrophotometer at
658 nm for MB dye
Results
Effect
of adsorbent dose with fixed conc of methylene blue ( 20
mg/L )
● Adsorbent used - Bagasse
● Percentage removal increased rapidly with
increase in adsorbent concentration
● Reaches 98.21% Removal for concentration
of 2g/L
● As adsorbent dose increases, there is a increase in
surface area for adsorption, so the removal is also
From the above graph we can observe that adsorption removal is about 98.21% in MB
dye removal with the bagasse.( which is highest among all the adsorbents).
EFFECT OF PH :
● This study was conducted taking 100ml solution in
conical flask, of varying different ph values (3-10)
● PH of the solution was monitored by adding 0.1N
H2SO4 (for low ph - acidic) or 0.1 N NAOH.
● From the figure we can see that the maximum
Removal % is in between ph 6-9
● Maximum removal is at ph 8 (93.01%).
● Above ph 8 the removal % drops down to 66.75 at ph 10
CONCLUSION
● The removal of MB dye from aqueous solution strongly depends upon pH
of the solution. The optimum pH for removal of MB dye on bagasse
powder was found at pH 6- 8
● Almost 100% removal of MB dye was possible at specified process
parameters both in batch process
● suggests the use of sugarcane waste powder as potential adsorbent for
removal of MB dye from aqueous solution.
