recognized, even as a child,
that appearance was important.

question arises: do employers
have the right to use
appearance as a hiring
criterion?
THE IMPORTANCE OF
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE IN
RECRUITING AND HIRING

I would like to begin by saying that hiring the right people for the job is
critical for organizational success. However, employee selection can be a
difficult process. Although employers use a variety of options to evaluate
personality and skill, physical attractiveness is an unsaid advantage in
terms of employability. First impressions are important, especially at
work. Your look is one of the first things a potential employer will notice
about you. Even though your excellent resume makes you look nice on
paper, you must still present yourself professionally and neatly to ensure
you look good in person.
PERSONALITY, BETTER THAN LOOKS

I’d rather comply with the topic, “Personality is more important than looks”. Both of these
adjectives fall under two different domains. There is something called Inner Beauty and Outer
Beauty. Personality is something that we call inner beauty which refers to the mindset and
character of a person and Looks is something that we call outer beauty which simply refers to the
physical appearance of a person. Looks or Outer Beauty is the one that can be pretended. There
are many ways in which a person can look good, be it Dressing, Make-up, Surgery, or any other
treatments but Inner beauty can’t be pretended. It reflects in the behaviour and attitude of a
person.
THERE IS A PERCEPTION THAT PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE APPLICANTS ARE STRONGER
CANDIDATES

Another sad and brutal fact is that physical appearance

has been used by many people as gauge of their social
status. A lot of people believe that the more they get
physically attractive the more they belong to a higher
social class. While we are not supportive of this idea,
we cannot deny the fact that looking good has a great
social impact. Looking good can help you land a better
job. One's physical appearance has a profound affect on
one's self-esteem. It is well documented that those who
are considered to be physically attractive earn higher
incomes.
Power is not about how you look

You can be strong and confident just when you dress better, you feel
better about yourself. As a natural consequence of feeling better, you
project this positive feeling outward to other people. Essentially, you
behave the way good-looking people behave: confidently. It's
essential to note that while appearance can impact our confidence
levels, true self-esteem comes from within. It's important to focus on
building a positive self-image based on our inner qualities, such as
kindness, intelligence, and compassion, rather than solely on our
appearance.
PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE
WORKERS HAVE BETTER SOCIAL
SKILLS

Attractive people may be more confident in social

interactions because of their self-image, which can
lead to positive interpersonal connections. As
individuals have more positive interactions, they
are likely to feel more safe in their roles and
improve their performance over time.

Physical appearance shows in your composure and

in your tone of voice. You communicate
confidence, knowledge, pleasantness, and
competence, all of which add to your physical
appearance as a comfortable speaker and the
audience as willing partners in the process of
knowledge sharing.
INTROVERTS

Beautiful people are more sociable than everybody else, the science says — or at least we're
biased to think so. Some people have often struggled to get their true talents seen and
appreciated, they are generally quite respectful of the different working styles and preferences of
others. Since introverts have often struggled to get their true talents seen and appreciated, they
are generally quite respectful of the different working styles and preferences of others. Introverts
don't give up easily.
DO LOOKS REALLY MATTER?

Your appearance at work sends many messages about how you view the environment, how much
respect you have for yourself and your work, what groups you identify with, and where you think
you belong within the organization. Making just a few adjustments to your appearance may lead
to more and better opportunities. Many companies and employers require employees to follow a
dress code that can also include restrictions on piercings, tattoos, makeup, nails, hair, facial hair,
and more. As long as these policies are not discriminatory, they are, for the most part, legal.
Some variations may exist between men and women in the policy, however, major differences in
the requirements between genders should not be present.
Personal presentation is how you present yourself
in everyday situations. This is a

communication skill that is essential in gaining

employment and being part of a

workplace environment. What you say and do are

part of your personal presentation,

as well as your outward appearance. Dressing

smartly, being clean and having

good personal hygiene, and carrying yourself well

is all part of making a strong first

impression and appearing professional.

How to appear more attractive

There are small changes that could increase their attractiveness. A few ways to appear more attractive include:
•Grooming and Personal Hygiene
Individuals who prioritize their grooming and hygiene habits are more likely to be perceived as attractive. Daily practices like
showering, dental hygiene, smelling good, moisturizing, taking care of hair and nails, and generally keeping clean can all play
a considerable part in attractiveness. Small efforts can cumulate into big differences in an individual’s look.
•Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Eating a healthy diet and working out can help increase attractiveness. Others are more likely to perceive someone making
healthy lifestyle choices as attractive because they are taking care of themselves. Eating nutritious food and exercising are
linked to mental and physical health benefits over time.
•Developing Style
Dressing well can undoubtedly impact how an individual is perceived, but developing a personal sense of style can be equally
important. People who prioritize clean and well-fitting clothes are usually regarded as more attractive, but that doesn’t mean
that clothes have to be boring. Incorporating pieces into a wardrobe that represent the owner’s personality can be a great way to
increase overall attractiveness.
•Self-Acceptance
Confidence is key to attractiveness, and practicing self-acceptance can be crucial. People who are confident in themselves often
appear attractive to those around them, even if their appearance doesn’t meet traditional beauty standards. Embracing unique
physical, emotional, and intellectual qualities is often the most attractive trait of all.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion when you appear attractively dressed and groomed, personally authentic, and
appropriate for the occasion, you feel more comfortable, confident, capable, cooperative and
productive. Even a person who is not attractive can take a little care of his/her image can easily
model himself into service sector.
