Korean Wave (Hallyu): Korean Cultural Export Since Early 1990s

 The Korean Wave (Hallyu, 한류 , 韓流 ) refers to the increased popularity of South

Korean culture around the world since 1990s. The term was coined in China in mid-1999 by
Beijing journalists surprised by the fast growing popularity of South Koreans and South Korean
goods in China. South Korea is among the world's top ten cultural exporters and the Korean
wave began with the export of Korean TV dramas such as “Autumn Fairy Tale”, “Winter
Sonata”, “Dae Jang Geum” (Jewel in the Palace), and “Princess Hours” across East and
Southeast Asia. The growing success of Korean dramas was soon matched by Korean movies,
popular music, food and language. While popular throughout Asia, the Korean Wave's influence
is most visible in China, Japan and Southeast Asia, spreading to the Middle East and Russia.
Korean Alphabet: Hangul
 October 9 is Hangul Day. Hangul which was called ‘hunminjeongeum’when it was
invented in 1443 and published in 1446. Before the invention of hangul, Korea didn’t have their
own characters to write their own language so they borrowed Chinese characters to express Korean.
As a result, it was so inconvenient because Chinese characters were not enough or so different from
Korean that it was difficult to express Korean fully. In order to solve this problem, King Sejong and
his researchers invented hunminjeongeum which is now known as hangul which literally means ‘the
proper sounds for the education of the people. However hangul was not widely used because of the
strong opposition of the aristocrats of Korea who insisted on writing ‘hanja’ the Chinese characters.
They probably saw hangul as a possible threat to their status because hangul designed so that even
commoners could learn to read and write. Only in the late dynasties of Joseon, researches of hangul
has been made and finally after the independence of the colonial rule hangul was officially taught
and learned in Korea. Written Korean is also unique, using a phonetic system called Hangul. It
stacks sounds into blocks that represent syllables, and its consistency means it’s fairly easy to pick
up.
