Lesson 4.

Introduction to Systems of
Linear Equations
Learning Competency

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able

to illustrate a system of linear equations in two
variables (M8AL-Ih-1).
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Correctly illustrate a system of linear equations in

two variables.

● Correctly determine if a given ordered pair is a

solution to a system of linear equations in two
variables.
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Accurately illustrate a word problem as a system of

linear equations in two variables.
Let us say that you are going to
combine two solutions. The first
solution has 80% alcohol
content, and the second solution
has 30% alcohol content. How
much of each solution should
you combine to create a 50 mL
solution with 50% alcohol
content?
This problem might sound difficult and may require trial and
error, but this problem can be solved using linear equations.

You will need two linear equations to solve this problem. This
forms what we call a system of linear equations. In this lesson,
you will learn about systems of linear equations.
Essential Questions

● How will you determine if an ordered pair is a solution to

the system of linear equations in two variables?

● How will you illustrate a word problem as a system of

linear equations in two variables?

System of Linear Equations

This consists of at least two linear equations with one or two
variables each. It can be written in the form where , , , , , and
are real numbers, where and must not be both equal to zero.
The same applies to and .

Solution to a System to Linear Equations

The ordered pair (𝑥, 𝑦) is a solution to a system of linear
equations if the values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 satisfy each of the equations
in the system of linear equations. It is the point of intersection
of the two lines when graphed in a Cartesian plane.
