OBJECTIVES :
The goal of this project is to provide a laboratory standard
induction furnace capable of electrically heating any metal for
experimental purpose.
This project also aims at providing the jewelry industry with a
low cost induction furnace capable of melting and alloying
small quantities of precious metal such as gold, silver and
platinum.
Brief Description :

A source of high frequency electricity is used to drive a large

alternating current through a coil. This coil is known as the work coil.

The passage of current through this coil generates a very intense and
rapidly changing magnetic field in the space within the work coil. The
workpiece to be heated is placed within this intense alternating
magnetic field.

Depending on the nature of the workpiece material, a number of things

happen...
Cont.
 The alternating magnetic field induces a current flow in the
conductive workpiece. The arrangement of the work coil and the
workpiece can be thought of as an electrical transformer. The work
coil is like the primary where electrical energy is fed in, and the
workpiece is like a single turn secondary that is short-circuited. This
causes tremendous currents to flow through the workpiece. These
are known as eddy currents.

 In addition to this, the high frequency used in induction heating

applications gives rise to a phenomenon called skin effect. This skin
effect forces the alternating current to flow in a thin layer towards
the surface of the workpiece. The skin effect increases the effective
resistance of the metal to the passage of the large current. Therefore
it greatly increases the heating effect caused by the current induced
in the workpiece.
BASICS OF INDUCTION HEATING
.LIST OF COMPONENTS:
List of the Components used in the Development of the Project
1. Voltage Regulators
2. Gate driver
3. MOSFET
4. Ferrite Core Transformer and Step-down transformer (220/24V)
5. Capacitor Bank
6. Work Coil
EXPECTED RESULTS :
After the completion of the project we will be able to “red hot” any provided
metal (iron) i.e. heated up to 600 degree with in few seconds.
APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT:
 Typically applications of induction heating are melting of metals,
heating of metals, brazing and welding and all sorts of surface
treatments. However , by using electric conductive recipients(e.g.
graphite) also other materials like glass can be heated.
 Minimally required heat doses for various tumor sizes in induction
heating cancer therapy determined by computer simulation using
experimental data.
 Low frequency induction heating (LFIH) is presented as technique for
the packaging of polymer based micro fluidic systems.
 Induction heating is an important enabling technology in the
platinum and gold jewelry manufacturing industry.
