One example of medieval English prose is John Wyelif. He was a professor at Oxford University and a church
figure. He was the first to criticize the authority of the Roman church. According to Wyelif, everyone has the
right to learn the sacred story on their own.
Another prose work is The Historia Regum Britanniae by Geofrey Monmouth (1100-1154). The book
contains the history of the English kings in Latin, then translated into French, and from French into English.
DRAMA
In addition to poetry and prose, in England also began to appear literary forms of drama. Drama originally
grew within the church as a medium for clergy to explain their sermons.
Dramatic acts are taken from the scriptures. For example, on Christmas (Christmas) the birth of Christ is
shown, while on Easter, the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ is presented.
In the Middle Ages (13th century) there were two kinds of drama, namely miracles which played out the
lives of saints, and mysteries which took themes from the Bible.
POETRY
Medieval poetry consists mostly of material romances, or romantic stories written in the form of
poems about French heroes (Roland), Celtic heroes (Arthur) and English heroes (Bevis O Hampton).
Metrical Romance is a long narrative poem about love and adventure.
* French material includes stories about Charlemagne and his knights (paladins), such as "the
Chanson de Roland".
* English material includes stories of the legend of "King Arthur“
* Roman material includes stories about from the East, such as Alexander the Great
