Safety, Health and Welfare

General safety precautions:

It is possible that accidents will happen in
the work. It is therefore important to observe
safety precautions to prevent accidents.
Most of the equipment, tools and machines
used in the workshop are dangerous, it is
therefore important for you to take safety
precautions when using them. Industrial Techniques

General safety precautions:

It is important to keep the workshop
clean: a clean workshop is usually a
safe workshop. Keep all materials,
machines and tools in their proper
places to avoid accidents. The floor
should always be clean. Industrial Techniques

General safety precautions:
Always wear an overall or an overcoat that is
not loose-fitting; loose clothing can get caught
in the revolving parts of a machine. Always
wear goggles or face shields, which are meant
to protect the eyes from such things as flying
chips, dust, and intense light. Use any special
protective clothing provided for the work you
are doing. Industrial Techniques

Using hand tools:
It is dangerous to use
defective tools
1. Do not use chisels or
punches with
mushroom heads as
chips of metal can fly off
the head while
hammering. Industrial Techniques

Using hand tools:
2. Do not use hammers and files with split,
loose or no handles, as they can cause
serious Injuries.

Using machines
You need to understand how to use the
machines in the workshop before you to
practice on them. There are specific
precautions to be observed using the
various types of machines.

Using machines
Drilling machines:
1. Hold the work properly in a vice, and bolt
the vice when necessary to prevent it
from 'spinning round'.

Drilling machines:
2. Use all protective guards on the
machine. Never try to hold small
workpieces with your fingers.

Using machines
Centre Lathe:
1. Secure work firmly in the chuck.
2. Never leave the chuck key in the chuck before
starting the machine.
3. It is dangerous to remove swarf once the
machine is in motion.
4. Make use of the safety devices attached.

Shaping machine:
1. Secure the work and the vice firmly.

2. Wear a goggles at all times as chips fly

out at the end of every cutting action,
which can cause eye injury.

Milling machine:
1. Never try to make any adjustment while
the machine is running.
2. Do not apply coolant to the work with a
brush when the cutter is revolving.
3. Keep your hands away from the cutter
when it is in motion. Industrial Techniques

Grinding machine:
1. Always use the eye guard and goggles to
protect your eyes when grinding.
2. You must hold small work in a hand vice
to prevent it from being dragged into the
gap between the wheel and the tool rest.

Lifting objects:
You will regularly have to lift various objects
which sometimes can be quite heavy. The
lifting position should be observed to
prevent injury to your spine and back
muscles. Never go near or beneath
suspended loads; there is always the
chance that they might fall and cause an

Research Assignment
There are several types of ferrous material.
There is one main type of ferrous material
that is manufactured in one main furnace.
This main material is what is used to make
all types of ferrous materials. All types of
ferrous materials are manufactured in a
furnace specifically made for its production.
