UN HUMAN RIGHTS

INTRODUCTION

•The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was


adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948
•The United Nations Human Rights Council is a United
Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect
human rights around the world.
•The Council has 47 members
•The headquarters of the Council are at the United
Nations Office at Geneva in Switzerland.
The UN Human Rights
 Some of the rights are :
 All human beings are born free and equal in
dignity and rights.
 Everyone has the right to life, liberty and
security of person.
 No one shall be held in slavery ; slavery and the
slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
 No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel,
degrading treatment or punishment.
 All are equal before the law
 The right to education and the enjoyment of the
benefits of cultural freedom and scientific
progress .
 The right to work in just and favorable
conditions.
 The right to social protection, to an adequate
standard of living and to an highest attainable
standards of physical and mental well-beings.
 Everyone has the right to a nationality.
Effectiveness of International parties

International responses are not very effective in


enforcing human rights.

 Human rights laws are expected to be recognized


and enforced by all sovereign nations.

When this does not occur there will have been


human rights abuses
