Unit 5

Encountering Stress as Part of the

Adolescence Stage

Personal Development
DepEd COMPETENCIES

At the end of this unit, the learners should be

able to do the following:
● Discuss that understanding stress and its sources during adolescence may
help identify ways to cope and have a healthful life.
● Identify sources of one’s stress and illustrate the effect of stress on one’s
system.
● Demonstrate personal ways of coping with stress for a healthful living.
VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, the learners should be able to do the

following:

● Express one's feelings and thoughts and find out the causes of stress.
● Consider and apply healthy coping strategies for stress in one's life.
● Empathize with other people's feelings, as one might be experiencing stress .
MINDSET MATTERS

Elizabeth Scott, Ph.D., wrote an article on how to handle stressful situations. One of
the things she suggested was to change what you can. Even when you cannot
change the general issue, there are sometimes specific components of a scenario you
can change. If you want to feel empowered when dealing with stressful situations,
try concentrating on what you can control rather than what is out of your
control.

Cause and Effect

Examples:

● maintaining school grades – “I feel stressed because it takes a

lot of time and effort to achieve specific grades.”
● friendship problems – “I do not want conflicts, and I do not

feel stressed whenever I have issues or problems with my
friends.”
● pressure at home – “Sometimes, I need to do something to help
resolve my problems at home, but I am not sure how to.”
Word Bank:

● Stress is the nonspecific response of the body to any demand (Selye

1936). It is also a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult
situation
● Stressor is a situation, event, or something that causes us to feel stressed.
● Positive stress is positive or helpful when your response to a stimulus
makes you more alert, more productive, and more motivated.
● Negative stress occurs when you have reached a tipping point or when
stimuli go on for too long, and your responses cause damage to your
health, relationships, productivity, and other aspects of your life.

SUCCESS TIPS

Hug from a Loved One

According to a study by Elizabeth Scott, Ph.D., hugging a loved one is one of

the most effective strategies for relieving stress. It claims that physical touch
significantly lowers stress. Hugs frequently produce a calming, relaxing
feeling. Hugging a loved one has several advantages. During a hug, a
hormone called oxytocin is released. Hence it is also known as the cuddle
hormone.
