Relative Clauses

Relative clauses
 Specify the meaning of the main clause
 Are introduced by conjunctions: who, whose, which, that, where, when
 Are divided into:

Defining(restrictive) Non-defining(non-
clauses restrictive) clauses
Do you remember the CD that I gave you
last week? He gave me a CD, which I loved instantly!

- can’t be taken away from the sentence


(essential info) - can be taken away from the sentence
- narrows down the meaning (nonessential info)
- can omit the conjunction (who/which/that) - can’t omit the conjunction
- usually is used with “that” instead of - no “that”, only “which”
“which” - comma
- no comma
