What is Thanakha?
• From children to older people, thanakha is something that Burmese
people use in their everyday life.
• Simply put in words, thanakha is just a yellowish paste that people
put on their faces and bodies after taking a bath.
• We can get the yellowish paste by grinding the bark of
thanakha with a bit of water on a kyauk pyin.
• We put thanakha on our faces for many reasons.
• It is said that Burmese people were using thanakha even
from years ago.
What is the origin of
o thanakha?
Seeing that the wall paintings of bagan women wearing thanakha in
a Bagan Pagoda shows that Burmese people were using thanakha
since the middle of the 11th century.
o The first written reference to thanakha used in Burma is found in a
14th-century poem authored by a companion of King Razadarit.
o The evidence of thanakha's early historic roots was founded
because of an earthquake that happened in Shwemawdaw Pagoda
back in the 1930s.
o From the ruins, a kyaupinin was founded and it is said to be owned
by the daughter of King Bayinnaung.

powders so that we can have many options to buy.

Thanakha and the beauty industry
 With the booming of the beauty industry, there are more choices for
beauty products.
 Despite new products and brands being created every day, thanakha is
still a unique beauty product of Myanmar.
 Many local brands are creating new products combining thanakha and
Western products such as thanakha-scented perfumes, lotions, and other
more.
 We as Burmese people should be supportive towards those local
entrepreneurs who are trying their best to promote the use of thanakha in
different industries.
 This will surely help the world to recognize thanakha as a cultural
heritage.
