ETHICS
Through creative and constructive thinking, Language Ethics considers how to advance
our understanding of the human commonalities of moral and linguistic capacities and the
challenge of linguistic difference and societal interdependence.
Ethics is a branch of philosophical study
that deals with issues of right and wrong,
fairness, and justice. It is a moral code
that individuals live by. Ethics can be
thought of as a collective set of principles
that are influenced by the culture of a
region, a nation, or the global community.
When committing your voice to the public sphere, you are faced with a series of ethical
considerations—from the language you use and the ideas you amplify to the way you
build your argument and credit others’ ideas. Ultimately, ethics in public speaking is about
using the power of our language honestly, thoughtfully, and responsibly.
WHICH LANGUAGE OF ETHICS
The term "ethics" is etymologically derived from the
Greek, "ethos" which means "custom" or habit.
Relation to human behavior, habits, and human
character as a whole.
First, ethical communication is that which does not unfairly label one thing or another based on personal
bias. So, in addition to choosing “public housing” over “the projects,” an ethical speaker will choose terms
that steer clear from intentional bias.
The Ethical Dimension means investigating the rationale behind events, how it
has changed our cultures, and, if we now regard the rationale as in the wrong,
how to avoid making the same mistakes.
Why is ethical dimension important?
The ethical dimension encourages a
need for meaningful historical
accounts that can help students
make either an implicit or explicit
ethical judgement.
