INDIGO

Indigo is a deep color close to the color wheel

blue (a primary color in the RGB color
space), as well as to some variants of
ultramarine, based on the ancient dye of the
same name. The word "indigo" comes from
the Latin word indicum, meaning "Indian", as
the plant-based dye was originally exported
to Europe from India.
IMPORTANCE OF
INDIGO

Indigo is rich in aesthetics and in meaning. In

terms of color meaning, indigo is quite
spiritual and mysterious in its symbolism. It's
the color of devotion, justice, creativity,
dignity, and wisdom. Indigo is used in
various cultures and celebrations including
the vibrant Holi festival.
SATYAGRAHA

‘Satyagraha’ was not originally coined by Gandhiji. Even before him, the
Idea of Satyagraha was found in religious books, like the Upanishads, the
Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Gita, the Quran and many others. It was
also practised by Indians as well as Westerners like Prahlad, Raja
Harishchandra, Socrates, Plato, Jesus, King Ashoka and many others.
According to Gandhiji, “the principle called Satyagraha came into being
before that name was invented. Indeed when it was born, I myself could
not say what it was.” Some of the westerners believe that Gandhiji
derived the idea of Satyagraha from Christ’s New Testament, specially
the Sermon on the Mount. Some others believe that he got this idea from
the writings of Tolstoy, though Tolstoy himself deduced it from the New
Testament. In fact, Gandhi derived his idea of Satyagraha neither from
Christ nor from Tolstoy, but from his own Vaishnavite faith.
IMPORTANCE OF
SATYAGRAHA

1.According to Gandhi, Satyagraha was a unique weapon to fight

injustice.

2.The idea of satyagraha highlighted the power of truth and the

need to search for the truth.

3.Satyagraha was a novel method of mass agitation, which stressed

the principle of truth, tolerance, non-violence and peaceful protests.

4.Satyagraha supported that for true cause and struggle against

injustice, physical force is not required to fight with the oppressor.

5.Gandhi believed that the satyagraha battle will be won and this
battle also unite the Indians by this dharma of truth and non-
violence
WHY WAS INDIGO
USED IN THE
SATYAGRAHA?

Gandhiji's first great experiment in Satyagraha was

accomplished in 1917 in Champaran, Bihar. The indigo
cultivators of Champaran were greatly exploited by
European planters. They were bound by law to grow indigo
on 3/20th (the tinkathia system) of their land & sell it to the
British planters at prices fixed by them. They invited
Gandhiji to take up their case but the district authorities
banned his entry to the district. He offered satyagraha as a
result of which an inquiry was conducted into the conditions
of the peasants. This helped in giving the indigo cultivators
some relief.
IMPORTNACE OF
INDIGO IN
SATYAGRAHA

It had caused the cultivators to protest against

the unfair practices of the British Raj.
Mahatma Gandhi started his first satyagraha
at Champaran in Bihar against the British
policy of Tinkathia system implemented on
the indigo cultivators of the region.
Champaran then was an important place for
indigo cultivation.
