HOW CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

WORKS

Akram Eerz
CSI
• Any investigation's objective is to bring the
criminal to justice.
• It is necessary to collect tangible evidence
without disrupting traces of it.
• Must keep evidence in its existing state
• It is necessary to take into account what the
lab will need to do with the evidence.
• The legal ramifications of allowing evidence
into a courtroom must be taken into account.
Steps during investigation
• The CSI team is contacted to
conduct an investigation by the
police or detectives on the site.
• The situation must be secured,
according to police.
• There are no stray individuals or
troubling evidence.
Initial walk-through
• CSI develops a general impression
of the crime scene.
• Check to see if anything has moved.
• Develops broad first hypotheses
• jots down possible evidence
• At this stage - TOUCHES NOTHING!
Documenting the Scene
• conducting a second walk-through, taking
pictures and drawing.
• A VHS walk-through is often conducted
• CSI touches NOTHING at this point too.

Collect potential Evidence

• Up until it gets to the lab, the evidence's tag,
log, and packaging will be intact.
• CSI may or might not analyse any evidence
based on their particular specialty.
Crime Lab
• Processing all evidences
• Lab results will be then provided to
the lead detective
Securing crime scene
• Think about other sites that might
be a part of the crime scene.
• CSI only has one opportunity to
collect all available evidence.
• Evidence are corrupted
Core area
• Obvious area of the crime scene where the bulk
of the evidence is located often guarded by
police
• CSI often expands the region after a walk-
through.
• Incorporates a safe area as well to preserve the
core area and reduce the chance of mistake

Search Warrant
• CSI will acquire a search warrant
• Secures the admissibility of the evidence in
court

alter over time
• Weather and Time
