INTRODUCTION 1
• Near Field Communication (NFC) is a set of short-
range wireless technologies, typically requiring a
distance of 4 cm or less to initiate a connection. NFC
lets you share small payloads of data between an
NFC tag and an Android-powered device, or
between two Android-powered devices.
BASIS 2
• NFC is rooted in radio-frequency identification technology
(known as RFID) which allows compatible hardware to both
supply power to and communicate with an otherwise unpowered
and passive electronic tag using radio waves. This is used for
identification, authentication and tracking. Similar ideas in
advertising and industrial applications were not generally
successful commercially, outpaced by technologies such as QR
codes, barcodes and UHF RFID tags.
Applications 3
1.Smart Cards: Payment using NFC-integrated smart cards offers easier payment
compared to the conventional multiple-step payment process. Top payment
services like Visa and MasterCard are offering NFC-embedded smart cards to
customers.
2.E-wallet (payment using a smartphone): Cashless payment systems using
mobile devices became popular at the beginning of this decade, and more services
are offering cashless payments for customers’ convenience. Using smartphone
applications, payments can be made using a simple tap or waving the card within
proximity.
3.Smart Ticketing: NFC-enabled smart ticketing systems are used in public
transportation systems worldwide. The system allows passengers to purchase
tickets and access the transportation system with a single tap of their NFC-enabled
device.
Applications 4
4. Medicine and Healthcare: NFC technology can be used to monitor and track
medical equipment, patient data, and medication. It can also be used to provide
patients with access to their medical records and other health-related information.
5.Keyless Access: NFC-enabled devices can be used to provide secure and convenient
access to buildings, homes, and vehicles. The technology can be used to unlock doors,
start cars, and even turn on lights.
Advantages 5
• Convenience: NFC allows for quick and easy transactions using
smartphones with the help of wallet apps
• Versatility: NFC is used for multiple applications in various domains
suchas banking, reservations, booking tickets, redeeming, entry/exit
passes,etc.......
• Security: NFC provides more security compared to magnetic strip based
debit and credit cards. It also uses PIN.
• Compatibility: NFC is compatible with existing RFID networks.
• Ease of use: No special software is needed. Moreover , it does not require
manual configurations and settings
Disadvantages 6

•It can only works in shorter distances which is about 10-20 cm.
•It offers very low data transfer rates which is about 106 or 212 or
424 Kbps.
•It is very expensive for the companies to adopt the NFC enabled
devices.
