NEPHEIOTURBIDIMETRY

 Definition of nephelometry
 Is an analytical chemistry technique that finds the
concentration of particles in a solution by measuring the
intensity of the light scattered by the particles in the
sample.
 Definition of Turbidimetry
 Turbidimetry is another analytical technique that is
similar to nephelometry , However .

 there are a few differences , in Turbidimetry , light of a

known wavelenghth is passad thrught the sample to be
analyzed .
THEORY
Turbidimetry deals with measurement Of intensity of transmitted
light

Nephelometry deals with measurement of intensity scattered light

Turbidometric measurement are made at fr0m the incident light beam

In Nephelometry , the intensity of the scattered light is measured ,

usually at right angles to the incident light mead
Instrumentation
. The instrument called as Turbideter and Nephelometer
The basic components of instrument are
Radiation source : Ordinary tungston filament lamp or mercury arc
. lamp can be used as source of radiation
Sample cell : The cells made from glass or plastic are used for
study
Rectangular cells are used in Turbidimeter and semi
. octagonal sample cells are used in nephelometer
Difference between samples cells :
Sample cell in turbidimeter Sample cell in nephelometer
 Factors affecting light scattering
 Particle size .
 Wavelength dependence .
 Distance of observation (set-up) .
 Polarization of incident light .
 Concentration of particles .
 Molecular weight of particles .
 Advantage :
Higher single to noise ratio (uniform scattering).

Higher sensitivity (lower detection limit).

High precision over turbidimetry .

 Disadvantages :
 High cost .

Easily damaged .

They require high power supply .

NOTE
Choice Of The Method depends upon the amount
of light scattered by suspended particles present
in solution
Turbidimetry high concentrated suspension.
 Nephelometry Low concentrated suspension .
More accurate results .
