PARTS OF SPEECH

Part of speech:
How a word is used in a sentence

There are eight main parts


of speech
1. Nouns
2. Pronouns
3. Adjectives
4. Verbs
5. Adverbs
6. Prepositions
7. Conjunctions
8. Interjections
NOUNS
Nouns (naming word) :
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea

Example of nouns : Daniel, London, table, dog, teacher, pen, city, happiness,
hope
Type of Nouns :
1. Common Nouns : is used to name a general type of person, place, or thing
Example : girl, city, animal, friend, house, food
2. Compound Nouns : two or more words that create a noun
Example : haircut, son-in-law, bus stop, sunglasses, swimming pool
3. Countable nouns : nouns that can be counted. They have a singular and a
plural form.
Example : car, desk, cup, house, bike
4. Uncountable nouns : Nouns that can not be counted. These nouns are called
mass nouns. These often refer to : Substances (paper, wood, plastic), liquid
(milk, oil, juice), gases (air, oxygen), abstract ideas (happiness, time,
information)
5. Collective nouns : collective nouns are words that refer to a set or group of
people, animal or things
Example : staff, team, crew, herd, flock, bunch
5. Concrete Nouns : nouns which refers to people and things that exist
physically and that at least one of the senses can detect
Example : dog, tree, apple, moon, coin,
6. Abstract Nouns : nouns that have no physical existence and are not
concrete
Example : love, time, happiness, bravery, creativity, justice, freedom,
speed
7. Gerund : sometimes calles verbal noun. Noun formed from a verb
Example : Running is good idea, reading, writingm dancing, thinking,
flying
PRONOUNS

Pronouns is used in place of a noun or phrase to avoid


repetition.

Example : I, You, We, They, He, She, It, Me, Us, Them,
Him, Her, This, Those.

Mary is tired. She wants to sleep. I want her to dance with


me
ADJECTIVE

Adjective describes, modifies or gives more


information about a noun or pronoun

Example : big, happy, green, young, fun, crazy,


three.
The little girl had a pink hat
VERB
A Verb shows a action or state of being. A verb
shows what someone or something is doing.

Example : go, speak, run, eat, play, live, walk,


have, are, is, am was, were
I like Woodward English. I study their charts and
play their games
ADVERB
An Adverb describes/modifies a verb, an
adjectives or another adverbs. It tells how,
where, when, how often or to what extent. Many
adverbs end in –ly

Example : slowly, quitely, very, always, never,


too, well, tommorow, here.
I am usually busy. Yesterday ate my lunch quickly.
PREPOSITION
A Preposition shows the relationship of noun
or pronoun to another word. They can
indicate time, place, or relationship

Example : at, on, in, from, with, near,


between, about, under
I left my keys on the table for you
CONJUNCTION
A conjunction joins two words, ideas,
phrases or clauses together in a sentence
and shows how they are connected

Exmples : and, or, but, because, so, yet,


unless, since, if
I was hot and exhausted but still finished the
marathon
INTERJECTION
An interjection is a word or phrase that
expresses strong feeling or emotion. It is a
short exclamations

Examples : Ouch!, Wow!, Great!, Help!,


Oh!, Hey!,Hi!
Wow! I passed my English test. Great!
Ouch! That hurt.
