THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC

• The road structure in downtowns can be described by directed networks.

• The intersections correspond to the nodes of the network.
• The roads correspond to the directed edges or branches of the network.
• We assume all traffic entering an intersection must leave that intersection. At
each node, the flow in equals the flow out.
• We also assume, that the total traffic entering the network equals the total
traffic leaving the network.
