NEWTON'S 2ND
LAW OF MOTION EQUATION
Newton's 2nd law of motion
- pertains to the behavior of objects for which all existing forces are not balanced.
Unbalanced force = net force

F O R C E A N D A C C E L E R AT I O N
- Force and acceleration is directly proportional to each other
, force increases the acceleration also increases.

M A S S A N D A C C E L E R AT I O N
- Mass and acceleration is inversely proportional to each
other, when mass increases the acceleration decreases and
vise versa.
NEWTON'S 2ND
LAW OF MOTION EQUATION

Equation:
F = ma Unit for force = ( N ) Newton
A = f/m 1 Newton = 1 kg . m/s²
M = f/a

F = force SI Unit for mass = kg

M = mass SI Unit for acceleration = m/s²
A = acceleration

NEWTON'S 2ND LAW OF MOTION EQUATION

A 60kg snowboarder has a force of 200 N exerted on him

downslope. Determine his acceleration.
Given:
m = 60kg
F = 200 N
a=?

Solution:
a = _F_ = _200N_ = 3.3 m/s²
m 60 kg

a = 3.33 m/s²

A bus pulled by a two truck has an acceleration of 4.0 m/s². What is

the mass of the car if the net force on the car is 5,000 N?

Solution:
Given:
a = 4.0 m/s² , m=??
m = _F_ = _5,000 N_ kg · m/s²
f = 5,000 N
a 4.0 m/s²
= 1,250 kg

m = 1,250 kg

Determine the accelerations that result when a 12-N force is applied

to a 3kg object and a 6kg object.
a.) Given: b.) Given:
F= 12 N , M= 3kg , a=?? F= 12 N , M= 6kg , a= ??

Solution: Solution:
A = _F_ = _12 N_ A = _F_ = _12 N_
M 3kg M 6kg
= 4 m/s² = 2 m/s²

a= 4 m/s² a= 2 m/s²

A net force of 15N is exerted on a book to cause it to accelerate at a

rate of 5 m/s². Determine the mass of the book

Given:
Solution:
F= 15N , m=??
a= 5m/s² m = _f_ = _15 N_
a 5 m/s²
= 3 kg

m = 3kg

What is the force required to accelerate a 1,550 kg truck at 60

m/s²
Given: Solution:
M= 1,550 kg , F=?? F= ma
a= 60 m/s² F= (1,550 kg) (60 m/s²)
= 93,000 kg m/s²
= 93,000 N

F= 93,000 N
