PHRASAL VERBS

Phrasal verbs is compound of a verb and a particle:


Verb + preposition

Example: Give up

dar hacia arriba


(rendirse)
Do not give up!
Do not surrender!

Phrasal verbs is compound of a verb and an Adverb


Verb + Adverb
Example: come back

Venir atrás
(regresar)
I usually come back late.
I usually return late
PHRASAL VERBS

Verb + particle
Come back put on look after find out
(regresar) (ponerse algo) (cuidar de) ( averiguar)
Look up take off break up run away
(Mejorar) (retirarse algo) (romper) (escapar)
Run up against put up with
(Enfrentar, afrontar) (tolerar )
PHRASAL VERBS TRANSITIVE

Many phrasal verbs are transitive. They have objects that resive the action
Example:
turn off pick up
(apagar) (recoger)
I always turn off the light
Yo siempre apago la luz
She picks up my brothers
Ella recoge a mis hermanos

 There are separable and inseparable


 Separable :
turn off pick up
(apagar) (recoger)
Inseparable
Look after get over
(Cuidar de) (superar)

PHRASAL VERBS INTRANSITIVE

 Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. They do not have an object. They are
always inseparable.
Example:
Break down run away
(averiarse) (escapar)
It broke down
Esto se averió
We have to run away
Nosotros tenemos que huir

The intransitive phrasal verbs are inseparable


It broke down
Esto se averió
We have to run away
Nosotros tenemos que huir
I usually come back late
They Wake up early
Ellos despiertan temprano
PHRASAL VERBS

 We need to now that some phrasal verb have three parts


Example:
run up against put up with look up to
(enfrentar, afrontar) (tolerar) (admirar)
 Remerber that almost every phrasal verbs have a synonimus that is a normal verb.
Example:
Come in enter
Entra entra
My sister look up to you my sister admire you
Mi hermana te admira mi hermana te admira
PHRASAL VERBS

 The phrasal verbs have more that one meaning


 Example:
pick up
(Mejorar, recoger)
My Father´s business is picking up
I have to pick his up

 Some phrasal verbs can be transitive or intransitive according the meaning


Example:
Pick up
Mejorar = intransitive, so it is inseparable
Pick up
recoger= transitive, so it is separable and inseparable

 Recommendable learn the phrasal verb by context


Example
Pick up
Mejorar
To talk about health we cannot use pick up=mejorar

 Sometimes the verb and the particle will give us a clue to the meaning

Call back get away

Llamar atrás conseguir lejos


Devolver la llamada alejarse
