Introduction

Adjective is a word naming an attribute of a noun

In linguistics, an adjective is a word that modifies a


noun or noun phrase or describes its referent. Its
semantic role is to change information given by the
noun.

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

A comparative adjective is an adjective used to


compare two people or things. We use comparative
adjectives to say that one person or thing demonstrates
a high degree of a quality or is a better than the other.
Example: taller, smarter, and slower are examples of
comparative adjectives.
Rules
1-For the Regular comparative adjectives we add ´´er´´ and ´´than´´
for short adjectives:
a)tall-taller b)cheap-cheaper c)nice- nicer d)warm-warmer e)cold-colder f)fast-faster

2-Two or more syllabes adjectives, add more:


a)Expensive - more expensive b)beautiful - more beautiful c)difficult - more
difficult d)romantic - more romantis

3-Short adjectives ending in one vowel and one consonant double the consonant and add ´´er´´:
a)big- bigger b)hot-hotter c)wet-wetter

4-Irregular Adjectives
a)good –better b)bad-worse far-further little- less

5-Adjectives ending in Y we remove the ´´Y´´ and add ´´ier´´:


a)noisy –noisier b)dirty-dirtier c)pretty-prettier d) easy-easier
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
READING
A: Which city do you prefer, London or Paris?
B: Well, I´m from Paris, so of course I love Paris.

A: London is a lot bigger than Paris.


B: It´s true. Paris is much smaller than, but it`s more romantic!
A: Yes. this is what people say.
B: And the food is better.
A: well, I´m not sure about that.
Practise
1-Complete the conversations using the comparative form of the adjectives:

Example: New York is older than London. (old)

NO, it isn`t! New York is more modern!(modern)

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
Superlative adjectives are adjectives that are used to
compere, describe 3 or more people or objects which is at
the upper or lower limit

Exemple:(the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest).

They are used in sentences where a subject or object is


compared to 3 or more people or a group of objects. Noun
(subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun
(object).
