CONTENTS
• What is blood?
• Composition of blood .
• Types of blood.
What is blood?
• Blood is a fluid connective tissue
• Its volume is 5-6 L in males and 4-5 in females
• It is slightly alkaline , with a pH of -7.4
• Its color varies from bright to dark red
• It has a salty metallic taste.
Composition of blood
• Blood consists of formed elements that are
suspended and carried in a fluid called plasma.
• The formed elements are –
• Erythrocytes
• Leukocytes
• Platelets
RBC/ ERYTHROCYTES
• An RBC is a 7.5 micron disc shaped body with a
central depression.
• Circular , biconcave , enucleated.
• 4.5 million per cubic mm of the blood in adult
• Average life span of 120 days .
• Formed in bone marrow and destroyed in liver
and spleen.
• The RBC contain respiratory pigment called
hemoglobin.
FUNCTIONS
• RBC transport oxygen from lungs to tissue and
carbon dioxide from tissue to lungs.
WBC/ LEUCOCYTES
• Colourless ,nucleated and phagocytic cells
• 5000-9000 per cubic mm of blood
• Average life span of 3-4 days
• Formed in bone marrow ,spleen, lymph node ,
thymus and payer’s patches and destroyed by
phagocytosis in blood, blood, liver and lymph
nodes .
TYPES OF WBC/ERYTHROCYTES
1. The total no of WBCs is 4000 to 11,000/mm3.

2. They are two types

• Granulocytes
• Agranulocytes
GRANULOCYTES
1. Neutrophiles
.Takes neutral stain
.3-5 lobed nucleus
.phagocytes in function

2. Eosinophiles
.Takes acidic stain
.Bilobed nucleus
.Antihistamine property
3. Basophiles
.Takes basic stain
.Twisted nucleus
. Release heparin and histamin
AGRANULOCYTES
• Lymphocytes
.large round nucleus .
.they produce antibodies
. Monocytes
. Nucleus is large kidney shaped .
.They are phagocytic
FUNCTION
• Aggregate at site of injury and form platelet
plug.
• Release thromboplastin which helps in clotting
of blood
PLATELETS
• Platelets are only about 20% of the diameter of
RBCs ,the most numerous cell of the blood .
• The normal platelet count is 150,000-
350,000/microlitter of blood .
• They are produce in bone marrow .
• Life span 5 to 9 days.
• They play an important role in blood clotting .
• Platelets that attach together in a blood clot release
serotonin , a chemical that stimulates constriction of
blood vessel.
