FOOD GUIDE
Basic Guide on Singapore Hawker Centre system and norms.
Hawker Centres and food courts are unique to Singapore
and probably the best part about it! Meant for daily meals
for the whole population. Don’t worry about the quality and
hygiene, they are very well regulated.
Few things to remember though.
• Only cash payments.
• Fully Self Service. Pay as you collect.
• Their menus are displayed on boards. Give them the item
number when ordering.
• You’ll find Chinese, Indian, Malay, Western and many
more. Just explore. Each food court will have a drinks
counter.
• Always mention whether you want to “Eat here” or “take
away”. Guide on local lingo-
• If you have restrictions on certain type of meat, best to
ask the seller. Makaan: food
• Most sellers know English but can be heavily accented. Meenoom: drinks
Keep you request short and simple. Da Bao: takeaway
• Carry your own spoons. Chinese shops will only have Teh: Tea (Teh “O” is black, Teh “C” is with milk,
chopsticks. add “kosong” in suffix to mean without sugar)
• Best to take your food on a Tray, available at each Kopi: Coffee (same principle applies as in tea)
counter.
Xie Xie Ni: Thank You
• Clear tray after eating, check for available return counter.
