SPEED

Presentation by Thet Htar Oo

What is speed?
Speed is a way of saying how far you can travel in a certain time.

To work out a speed, you must measure

How to calculate it?
a distance and a time. The mean (or average) speed of
But many objects do not travel at a a journey is the total distance
constant speed. For example, cars can travelled, divided by the total time

towns, and may have to stop at
junctions. So only the average can be
worked out. speed = distance
time
Units for speed
The units you use for speed
depends on the measurements Converting speed units
you take.
To convert a speed in m/s to km/h
you must divide it by 1000 because
For example, if a bus travels 200
[1000m=1km] and then multiply it by
kilometers in 4 hours, its speed
3600 because [3600s=1hour]
would be in kilometers per hour
(km/h). Other units for speed that
are often used are meters per 1000
second(m/s) and miles per 20 m/s = 20 × = 72 km/h
3600
hour(mph).

Relative speeds
When you talk about how fast you usually walk, you are measuring your
speed over the ground.
However, you can also walk on a train while it is moving.
In this case, if you walk at 2 m/s towards the front of the train and the train is
travelling at 50m/s, your speed relative to the ground outside is 52m/s.
If two trains are moving towards each other, and both are moving at 100
km/h, they are moving at 200 km/h relative to each other.

Sailors and pilots have to think about relative motion all the time because
water and air are usually moving.
FACT
This man is only moving
slowly relative to the train, but
he could be moving at up to
50 m/s relative to the ground.
