1. A fourth-year student at KMCT Medical
College suicide:
Ushmal, 23, student of KMCT Medical
College, Mukkom, leapt to her death from
the top floor of the college building on
Wednesday evening. On November 2, she
had written a post on the college confession
page ‘KMCT Xposed-MBBS confessions’
directed at senior boys. The post mentioned
how her seniors misbehaved with junior
girls and how the students were often
‘labelled’ in the college. Following the post,
she started receiving threats and warnings
on various social media platform.
2. Ritu Kholi case of cyberstalking:
• In 2001, India’s first cyberstalking case was
reported. Manish Kathuria was stalking Ms.
Ritu Kohli by illegally chatting on the web
site, using her name; and used obscene and
obnoxious language, and distributed her
residence telephone number, invited people
to chat with her on the phone.
• As a result, Ms. Ritu Kohli was getting
obscene calls from various states of India
and abroad, and people were talking dirty
with her.
• The police had registered the case under
Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code for
outraging the modesty of Ritu Kohli.
