What is A PLURAL
NOUN?
A plural noun is a noun that refers to more than one
person, place, thing, or idea.

RULES
1. To make regular nouns plural, add –s to the end.

Examples:

Cat - Cats
House - Houses
Tree - Trees
If the singular noun ends in –s, –ss, –sh, –ch,
2. –x, or –z, you usually add -es to the end to make it
plural.
Examples:

Bus - Buses
Class - Classes
Lunch - Lunches
Tax - Taxes
3. If the singular noun ends in –o, you usually add –es to
make it plural.
Examples:

Potato - Potatoes
Tomato - Tomatoes
Hero - Heroes
However, there are some exceptions:

Photo - Photos
Rodeo - Rodeos
Piano - Pianos
4. If a singular noun ends in –y and the letter before the –y is
a consonant, you usually change the ending to –ies to make
the noun plural.
Examples:

City - Cities
Story - Stories
Puppy - Puppies
5. If a singular noun ends in –y and the letter before the –
y is a vowel, simply add an -s
Examples:

Key - Keys
Toy - Toys
Ray - Rays
6. For most nouns that end with –f or –ef, you add an –s to
form the plural version. However, for some nouns ending
this way, you must change the –f or –ef to –ve before
adding the –s.
Examples:
Chef - Chefs
Belief - Beliefs
Leaf - Leaves
Wife - Wives
7. Irregular Nouns
Examples:

Goose - Geese
Foot - Feet
Woman - Women
Man - Men
8. Unchanging Nouns
Examples:

Rice - Rice
Sheep - Sheep
