Three Types of Verbs
1. Action verbs, as the name suggests, are action words. Words like write, listen,
obey, and participate are examples of actions verbs.
Example: She writes an excuse letter to her teacher.

2. Linking verbs are verbs that link the sentence’s subject to an adjective or a noun
that identifies or describes the subject.
Example: My mother is the kindest person I know.

3. Helping verbs (auxiliary verbs) extend the main verb’s meaning. They are also
used to show the tense of the verb. They usually comes before action verbs.

Modals of obligation
• those that primarily express a firm obligation or necessity;

• duty, responsibility and commitment

• those that express a recommendation or moral obligation

How to use modals of obligation?

The modal “must” shows an obligation we have no choice about, a strong
obligation.

“I must feed the dog before I go out for the evening.”


Must can also be used when you are confident and sure about something
happening in the present.

“The meeting starts at 10? We must leave soon.”


Must often shows us that the obligation comes from the speaker (or the
authority that wrote the sentence).
“You must hand in your homework on Tuesday or
you will lose ten percent of your grade.”

We can also use “have to” to talk about rules and regulations. It can be used
to express a more external obligation.

The authority for the obligation doesn’t come from the person who is speaking.
