2. Linking verbs are verbs that link the sentence’s subject to an adjective or a noun
that identifies or describes the subject.
Example: My mother is the kindest person I know.
3. Helping verbs (auxiliary verbs) extend the main verb’s meaning. They are also
used to show the tense of the verb. They usually comes before action verbs.
Do we have helping verbs here?
May I go out?
• CAN/COULD/MAY/MIGHT
How to use modals of permission?
use the most appropriate modal for the situation.
The modal "can" is used to express the ability to do something, and can also
be used to ask and give for permission to act in the present.
Can I borrow your phone?
Can I leave early later, please?
The modal “could” is used to ask for permission (but not to give
it). Could is more formal and polite than can. It can also be used
to ask for permission to act in the future.
We can also use “have to” to talk about rules and regulations. It can be used
to express a more external obligation.
The authority for the obligation doesn’t come from the person who is speaking.
Perhaps the rule is a general law or obligation.
We use should/ ought to when talking about things which are desired or ideal.
The modal “can’t” usually gives the idea of something that is against the rules.
Mustn’t usually means that it is the speaker who is setting the rule.
