MULTIPLEXER:-
Multiplexing, or muxing is a way of sending multiple signals or streams of information over
a communications link at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal.
When the signal reaches its destination, a process
called demultiplexing, or demuxing recovers the separate signals and outputs them to
individual lines.
• It is a device that has multiple inputs and a single line output.
• The select lines determine which input is connected to the output.
• It is also used to increase the amount of data that can be sent over a network
within certain time.
It provides both private and efficiency.
Why Multiplexing is Required?
To enable network devices to communicate with each other without needing a dedicated connection
between each device pair.
When many signals or channels are to be transmitted, then from transmitter’s side that sends
simultaneously i.e. multiplexer converts many into one, so that at the receiving end also all input we
get simultaneously.
Sending many signals separately is expensive and requires more wires to send. So there is a need of
multiplexing. For example in cable T.V distributor sends many channels through single wire.
TYPES OF MULTIPLEXERS:-
Time division multiplexer (TDM):
In this type of multiplexer, the input signals are transmitted one
at a time, with each signal taking turns transmitting over a shared channel. A TDM system uses a
clock to synchronize the transmission of each signal, ensuring that they are correctly transmitted.
Frequency division multiplexer (FDM):
FDM is a type of multiplexer that combines multiple signals onto a
single transmission medium by dividing the available bandwidth into several channels, with
each channel carrying a different signal. FDM is commonly used in radio and television
broadcasting.

Wavelength division multiplexer (WDM):

WDM is a type of multiplexer that combines several optical signals with
different wavelengths onto a single optical fiber, allowing more data to be transmitted over the
same fiber.
USES OF MULTIPLEXERS:-
• Used in data communications for several computers
to communicate over 1 line.
• Used in radio to select one channel from many.
• Used to route data within a computer.
• Used for function generation.
• Above one signal can be transmitted over a single medium.
• The utilization of a medium bandwidth can be done very effectively
• Multiplexing enhances the network’s economic stability because it reduces both the time as well as
cost required for the operation of the physical medium when a single medium serves many signals or
subscribers or applications.
• In telecommunications, multiplexing plays a key role to reduce the cost of networks through reducing
the number of communications links required among two points.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:-
Advantages Disadvantages

 Saves space  Limited number of inputs

 Saves space
 Complexity of design

 Increases efficiency  Signal degradation

 Simplifies design
 Limited bandwidth
APPLICATIONS:-

* Multiplexer is used as data selector device.

*Multiplexers are used in communication systems to increase the efficiency of
the system.
*Multiplexers are used in telephone networks for integration of several audio
signals on a single transmission line.
*To maintain large amount of data, multiplexers are also used in computer
memory systems.
*Multiplexers are also employed in TV broadcasting systems.
CONCLUSION:
Multiplexers are an essential component of
modern communication systems, enabling
multiple signals to be transmitted
over a single channel.

They come in various types, including

TDM, FDM, and WDM, and are widely
in telecommunications, broadcasting,
and fiber optic systems.

The selection of the appropriate type

of multiplexer depends on the specific
requirements of the application.
