Chapter 6.3.3
Systems
A. What are Systems?
• The mouth and the stomach are not linked together but have the
functions of digesting food and obtaining energy.
• Different organs that work together to achieve one or more
physiological functions make up a system.
• For example, the organs related to the uptake of food and digestion
are the buccal cavity pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine,
and anus as well as the salivary glands, gastric glands, intestinal
glands pancreas, liver etc. These digestive organs work together to
digest food and absorb nutrients. They are called the digestive
systems.
B. 8 Types of Systems
1. Digestive system
2. Circulatory system
3. Respiratory system
4. Reproductive system
5. Nervous system
6. Motor system
7. Endocrine system
8. Urinary system
C. Functions of systems
No. Systems Functions
1 Digestive system To digest the food before being absorbed and utilized by human
2 Circulatory system To bring nutrients and oxygen to the body cells and to also carry carbon
dioxide produced by the cells away from the body
3 Respiratory system To complete the process of absorbing oxygen gas from the atmosphere
and releasing carbon dioxide gas out of the body.
4 Reproductive To achieve the purpose reproduction
system
5 Nervous system The main structure in regulating the human body’s functions
6 Endocrine system To regulate the physical activities of the human body
7 Motor system Functions of movement, support and protection.
8 Uninary system Most of the metabolic waste products in the human body are passed out
as urine through the urinary s
D. Summary
• Human body is made up of eight systems :
- digestive system,
- circulatory system,
- reproductive system,
- respiratory system,
- nervous system,
- motor system,
- endocrine system &
- urinary system.

• Different systems in human body are interconnected to respond to external stimuli and
make body whole.

• For example, when you are jogging, motor system needs more oxygen gas. Under
regulation of respiratory system and endocrine system, actions of respiratory and
circulatory system are reinforced, causing breathing and heartbeat to increase.
