FESTIVALS OF JHARKHAND
HAL PUNHYA
80% of the state's population is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. This
fact signifies the importance of a good harvest for the people's livelihood. This
festival marks the prosperous start of ploughing. The farmers plough two and a half
circles of their farms in the morning, believing they will get a good yield. Many
people also call this day "Akhain Jatra". If you want to stay close to nature and
celebrate the magical powers of nature and farmers, just visit Jharkhand during this
festival.
 Where: Farming zones throughout the state
 When: First day of Magh month
 Highlights: Manifesting a prosperous harvest by ploughing 2.5 circles of the land.

SARHUL
Want to stay close to nature and show gratitude for everything it has provided? Then you
should join the authentic celebration of Sarhul. It is a famous festival in Jharkhand and an
innovative way to welcome the new year (Hindu calendar). Various tribes in the state,
including the Mundas, Ho, and Oraon, celebrate this festival. Many communities call this
festival the Khudi, Baha, Ba, and Jankor Festival. People fast and worship many deities with
Saal trees to thank their protectors. Meanwhile, the village priest (Pahan) fasts for a few
days and fills three earthen pots. After 3 days, they observe the pots and predict the rainfall.
Later, the priest performs pooja and offers village deities and ancestors three young roasters
to attain their blessings. People take out a rally for the celebration.
 Where: Tribal areas of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bengal
 When: From the fortnight of Chaitra month to Jeth month

FESTIVALS IN TELANGANA
BATTUKAMMA FESTIVAL
Bathukamma festival is a festival of Colorful flowers, one of the famous festivals of Telangana, and is celebrated
before the onset of winter during half monsoon. It is a 9-day festival that starts with Engili Pula Bathukamma on
Mahalaya Amavasya and Ends with Saddula Bathukamma on Durgashtami. On these nine days, Bathukamma is
attractively decorated by placing various types of flowers in cone shapes on wide plates and offering various
types of food items (naivedyam). Then, women and children dressed in traditional costumes identify the
Bathukamma in the center and sing songs moving around it, rhythmically clapping their hands. Then, at last, the
Bathukamma is immersed in the water. The reason for this celebration is that the flowers can cleanse the rivers
and lakes naturally.
 Highlights: Young girls and Women sing beautiful songs and dance around the Bathukamma arrangement.
 When: September-October.
 Where: All over Telangana.
 Duration of Festival: Nine days.

BONALU FESTIVAL
Bonalu is one of the regional festivals of Telangana celebrated in the twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad
and other parts of Telangana during the Telugu month of Ashada (July or August). During this festival, women
prepare Bonam (brass pot) filled with milk, jaggery and cooked rice and perform special pujas for Mahakali
Amma. The pot is decorated with turmeric, neem leaves, kumkum and is offered to Goddess as a thanksgiving by
carrying on their heads.

The Bonalu celebrations start at the Golconda fort on the first Sunday, the second Sunday at the Ujjaini
Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad and Balkampet Yellamma temple in Balkampet. The third Sunday is at the
Pochamma and Katta Maisamma temple and Matheswari temple of Lal Darwaza in the old city during the Telugu
month Ashaadam. Other temples such as the Akkana Madanna Temple in Haribouli and the Muthyalamma
Temple in Shah Ali Banda are famous venues for Bonalu. Millions of devotees flock to the temples to visit
Goddess Mahakali.
 Highlights: Women prepare a Bonam and offer it to the Goddess by carrying it on their heads, Pothuraju,
Rangam, Ghatam.
 When: July-August.
 Where: Twin Cities and other parts of Telangana.
 Duration of Festival: Four Sundays of Ashadam where two days are celebrated in different areas.

RELIGON IN JHARKHAND
Hinduism is the majority religion in Jharkhand, followed by nearly 67.83% of total population as of 2011 census.
There has also been a significant population of followers of Islam and Sarnaism, with 14.53% and 12.52%
respectively and Christianity being a significant minority, followed by 4.3%.

RELIGION IN TELANGANA
According to the 2011 census, Hindus form 85.1% of the State's population. Muslims form 12.7% and Christians
form 1.3%.
TOURIST PLACES IN JHARKHAND
BETLA NATIONAL PARK
The park has a variety of diverse eco-systems and abundance of wild animals. Elephants in large numbers
are seen mostly between the end of the monsoon season, to the time when water holes begin to dry in
March.
Predators include the sloth bear and panther, while scavengers include the wolf, jackal and hyena. Other
animals include large herds of gaur and chital, large families of langurs, rhesus monkeys, Indian giant
squirrels, mouse deer, sambhar deer, four-horned antelopes, nilgai, kakar, small Indian civets, ant
eating pangolin, porcupine and mongoose. White tigers that remained in the park were transported to
zoos.
Birds include the hornbill, peafowl, red jungle fowl, black partridge, white-necked stork, black ibis, swamp
grey, quail, pied hornbill, wagtail, harial, dove, drongo, crested serpent-eagle, forest owlet, papeeha, and
other birds usually found in dry deciduous forests. The Kamaldah lake attracts several varieties of water
birds including the common whistling, cotton teal, knob-billed duck, snipe and geese.

JUBILEE PARK
Jubilee Park is an urban park located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. It is a popular
destination for all those who wish to have an outdoor picnic, enjoy some outdoor activities
and games or even just to have a relaxing day out with friends and family. Popular amongst
joggers and cyclists, it is a gigantic park, recreation centre, fountains and a zoo, amongst
other attractions.
This local attraction was opened to the public in 1958, on the occasion of the city's golden
jubilee, the 50th anniversary of establishment. This park was originally a gift to the town of
Tatanagar(Jamshedpur) from the Tata Steel Company.
While being built under the visionary Jamsetji Tata, the Brindavan Gardens in Mysore were
used as an inspiration. This park also shows off a status of Jamsetji Tata and is also known as
the Mughal Gardens of Jamshedpur. The presence of the Tata Steel Zoological Park, Nicco
Jubilee Amusement Park, Jayanti Sarovar(Zoo Lake), Bat Island, Children's Park, and Rose
Garden is part of the reason why this park is such a famous one.

TOURIST PLACES IN TELANGANA
ALAMPUR
Surrounded by Nallamala Hills, Navabrahma Temples are the centrepiece of this town. Dating
back to the 7th Century AD, the Shiva temples are icons of Chalukya architecture. A visit to the
Jogulamba Temple, a key Shakti Peetha in Hindu mythology, is also recommended. For those
with a deep interest in Hindu art and architecture, there is the archaeology museum to visit.

ANANTHAGIRI HILLS
Hyderabad’s favourite weekend retreat is located 90 km from the city. The hills hide a vast
wildlife sanctuary that is a trekker’s delight. The opportunity of camping in the hills ranks it
among the popular places in Telangana to visit for couples. Nagasamudram Lake in the heart of
the hills offers a spectacular view during the monsoons. The hills also hide small fortifications,
caves, and structures that are favoured by explorers.
