5thCentury BCs the people in China
played a game called Ti Jian Zi.
Ti Jian Zi means “kicking the shuttle”.
The objective of the game is to keep the
shuttle from hitting the ground with using
the hand.

 The game named Battledore and shuttlecock were
played in China, Japan, India, and Greece.
 It became a popular game in England.
 In Europe this game became known as Jeu De
Volant.
 1860-this game named POONA in India (added net)
 The British Army learned this game and took the
equipment to England in 1870’s.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Player- any person playing badminton


Match- the basic contest in badminton between
opposing sides consisting of two or four
players.
Singles- a match where there is one player on
each opposing sides.
Doubles- a match where there are two players

on each opposing sides.


 Serving Side- the side having the right to serve.
 Receiving side- the side opposite to serving side.
 Rally- a sequence of one or more strokes in service
until the shuttle ceases to be in play.
 Drive- a return or stroke that sends the shuttle in a
relatively flat trajectory, parallel to the floor but
high enough to pass over the net.

Smash- an overhead return or stroke sent
down into the opponent’s court with
great speed and power.
Return- a method of hitting your
opponent’s shots back over the net.
Service- is the act of putting the shuttle
into play at the beginning of a point or
rally. 6
EQUIPMENTS
 Racket- 680mm in
length and 230mm in
width.
 Shuttlecock- an open
conical shape formed
by feathers embedded
into a rounded cork
base. 2types- plastic

Court- the overall dimensions of
a badminton court is 20 feet by 44 feet.
