CONSTELLATIONS
SLIDESMANIA.C
QUICK FACTS

Constellations are a group of stars, which form a pattern

when seen from Earth.

There are 88 constellations recognized by the International

Astronomical Union.

Earth's rotation affects how we perceive stars in the night sky. It

particularly affects the rising and setting of stars.

Earth's revolution also affects how we perceive stars. In particular,

Earth's revolution around the sun makes it possible to see constellations
that cannot be seen on other days of the year. Depending on one's
SLIDESMANIA.C

location on Earth, an observer can only see a specific set of stars and
constellations.
Constellation Patterns

The stars in constellations are imaginatively

linked together to represent an animal a person, or
an object in the night sky.

Through constellations, astronomers can better

organize the skies into recognizable sections
and forms.

Asterisms
Asterisms are smaller patterns of stars within a
constellation. The constellations cover the celestial sphere
An asterism is not a constellation. An asterism is a
pattern found within a constellation. On the other
hand, a constellation is the official star patterns

that divide the night sky, as determined by the

International Astronomical Union.
 The altitude refers to the angle between
the star's position and the horizon.

 The direction is found along the horizon.

It is represented by the four cardinal
points – north, south, east, and west.

 The point directly overhead is referred to as

the zenith.

 The horizon describes all points that are 90°

away from the zenith. It is the boundary between
the portion of the sky that is blocked from Earth
SLIDESMANIA.C

and the part which is visible.

The Rotation of Earth and Daily Motion of Stars

 Earth rotates from west to

east, which makes the stars and
other celestial objects appear
to rise in the east and set in
the west.
SLIDESMANIA.C
Circumpolar stars are stars that do
not set. They are located near the
north celestial pole. All the other
stars that are affected by the
Earth's motion are called non
circumpolar stars.
SLIDESMANIA.C
The Revolution of Earth and the Constellations

 In addition to the Earth's rotation, the

Earth also revolves around the sun, once
every 365.25 days. Consequently, the sun
appears to move with respect to the stars.
Each day the motion of the sun is like the
motion of a star, but not always the same
star throughout the year.
 Because of the Earth's revolution, we
see different stars during the night over
the course of a year at different times of
the year.

 Winter constellations are best seen in December,
January, and February. They include Orion, Canis
Major, Gemini, Taurus, and Eridanus, to name a
few.

 Spring constellations are those that are seen

during March, April, and May. Constellations
such as Leo, Cancer, Bootes, and Aquarius may be
seen during these months.

 Summer constellations are best observed in the

months of June, July, and August. It includes
Scorpius, Sagittarius, Cetus, and Eridanus.

 Constellations observed during September,

October, and November are considered as the
autumn constellations. Stars of Andromeda,
SLIDESMANIA.C

Perseus, and Pegasus are best seen during these

months.

It is estimated that more than 50 million kangaroos live there. They are Australia’s national symbol and appear on postage
