AUTOMATION OF

CUSTOMER CLAIMS IN
INSURANCE
COMPANIES
PROJECT OVERVIEW
• Insurance smart claim is a web-based system which brings a new era in insurance claims
management, through integrating the currently technologies which are artificial
intelligence (AI) and optical character recognition (OCR). In response to the rapidly
evolving challenges of the insurance industry, our project aims to revolutionize
traditional claims processing methodologies. By harnessing the power of AI, we aim to
automate and expedite the claims workflow, minimizing manual interventions as well as
reducing claims processing times.
• The use of OCR technology enhances the system's capability to extract and interpret
textual information from documents, introducing a new level of efficiency and accuracy.
Rooted in a commitment to user-centric design, our web interface ensures accessibility
and collaboration for insurance professionals, clients, and administrators. As we
implement this project, our main goal is to redefine the insurance claims experience,
setting new standards for speed, accuracy, and adaptability in the digital age.
MAIN OBJECTIVE
• To develop the system that will revolutionize insurance claims management in
Tanzania by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and optical character
recognition (OCR) technologies.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
• Conducting thorough research and interviews with stakeholders to understand existing
processes and procedure, challenges, and specific requirements for AI and OCR
integration.
• To develop and implement an AI-driven module to automate the processing of
standard insurance claims, reducing manual intervention and expediting the overall
claims workflow.
• To integrate OCR technology to extract relevant information from scanned
documents, such as receipts, claims forms and accident reports, to facilitate seamless
and accurate data entry into the system.
• Evaluation based on decision making and how a model will support the whole
insurance process.
PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE
• Efficiency and time reduction within the process:
• Accuracy and fairness:
• Fraud prevention and financial integrity:
• Client transparency and satisfaction:
PROJECT SCOPE
• Project focus: The primary focus of the project is on managing car insurance claims.
• Stakeholders: Company, brokers and their customer.
• Technology considerations: Optical character recognition and artificial intelligence
• Geographic scope: Tanzanian insurance sector
LITERATURE REVIEW
• This literature review examines the role of optical character recognition (OCR)
and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the context of insurance claim
processing within Tanzania. By exploring the theoretical foundations, related
works, and identifying research gaps, this review aims to contribute insights into
the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Tanzanian insurance sector
RELATED/SIMILAR WORK
• From the literature, studies done by Zhang and li (2019) and Patel et al. (2021) delve
into the role of AI in fraud detection within the insurance sector. These works
underscore the effectiveness of Artificial intelligence models and pattern recognition
in identifying and preventing fraudulent claims. But there is a need for further
exploration into the specific challenges of fraud detection within the Tanzanian
insurance landscape.
• The study done by George Nagy in 1980s-2000s involved the Research in document
image analysis, layout understanding, and OCR, with a focus on improving
document understanding systems but his research did not explain on extracting
information from handwritten documents related to insurance claims using the OCR
system.
METHODOLOGIES
• Research Approaches: Mixed approaches
o Quantitative method
Quantitative data can be used in evaluation and enumeration calculation so as to
remedy the client the required amount.
o Qualitative method
Since qualitative data is required for analysis and instructing the AI model for it
to help in decision making as the claim processed

• Research Method : Agile process, so as to increase flexibility and

engagement of stakeholders and hence increase the performance and
implementation of the system.
DATA COLLECTION
TECHNIQUES/METHOD
• Questionnaires : open ended questions
“How would you describe your experience with the current insurance claim
submission process?”
“What expectations or concerns do you have regarding the use of OCR and AI
in the insurance claims process?”
• Interviews : structured and unstructured interview
“How do you perform your tasks from when you receive customer claims for
remedy upto decision on customer’s claim
“What are the challenges that you face on adjusting customer’s claim”
“At which aspect automation of customer’s claim will overcome those
challenges”
