Composite materials
A composite is combination of two materials in which one of the materials, called the “reinforcing phase”,
is in the form of fibers, sheets, or particles, and is embedded in the other materials called the “matrix
phase”.

The reinforcing material and the matrix material can be metal, ceramic, or polymer. Composites typically
have a fiber or particle phase that is stiffer and stronger than the continuous matrix phase and serve as the
principal load carrying members.
According to type of matrix material they are classified as:

• Metal Matrix Composites (MMC)

• Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC)

• Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC)

 Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC)
 Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)
 Particle reinforced polymer (PRP)

 Fiber Reinforced Polymer:

Common fiber reinforced composites are composed of fibers and a matrix. Fibers are the reinforcement
and the main source of strength while matrix glues all the fibers together in shape and transfers stresses
between the reinforcing fibers. Sometimes, filler might be added to smooth the manufacturing process,
impact special properties to the composites, and / or reduce the product cost.
 HYBRID COMPOSITES
Hybrid composites are more advanced composites as compared to conventional FRP composites. Hybrids
can have more than one reinforcing phase and a single matrix phase or single reinforcing phase with
multiple matrix phases or multiple reinforcing and multiple matrix phases. They have better flexibility as
compared to other fiber reinforced composites.

PROBLEM STATEMENT :

Mostly in automobile industry, the car door trim panel were made by plastics (Polyproylene ,pvc,
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and textiles. It is observed that plastic are more used in interiors.
So as to increase bio degradability, hybrid composite materials with natural fibre reinforcement
like hemp and bamboo was introduced because of their strength to weight ratio . These fibre’s are
low denser, high in strength, less cost and have excellent mechanical properties. So this could
decrease the environment aspects and an alternative for the plastics.

SCOPE:
 To understand the mechanical properties of natural fiber reinforcement polymers .

OBJECTIVES :
 To carry out moisture absorption test of natural fibers reinforced composites.

 To evaluate flexural strength of natural fibre reinforcement composites.

 To conduct experimentation on tensile strength and impact strength at different compositions of natural
fiber reinforcement.

 To carry out the hardness properties of natural fibre reinforced composites.

METHOD OF APPROACH
 Procurement of fibre’s.
 NAOH treatments of the fibres.
 Extracting different compositions by Taguchi analysis.
 Fabrication of composites with different composition.
 Testing of mechanical properties and water absorption.
