Record bases and

occlusion rims
An interim denture base used to support
the record rim material for recording the
maxillomandibular records

Also called the denture base

Record base
Denture base (record base, Base plate):
 It is well adapted plate to which an occlusion rim is attached

 It is a rigid relatively thin layer of wax, shellac or

thermoplastic polymer adapted over the edentulous surfaces of
cast to form a base which together with the attached occlusion
rims serves as record base
Help in transfer of accurate jaw
relationships to an articulator

To enable the setting of artificial teeth for

trial denture

Objectives
Occlusion rims:
Occluding surfaces fabricated on temporary or permanent denture
base for purpose of recording maxillo mandibular jaw relations
and arranging the teeth
Record bases:

 It represents the base of the denture and used to record

maxillomandibular relations and arranging teeth

Requirements:

 it should be rigid

 Well adapted to final cast

 Stable and retentive in mouth

 Smooth and not irritate oral tissues

 No more than 1mm thick on the crest and facial slope of the ridge

 2mm thick on palatal and lingual flange

 Borders should be rounded

Classification :
A. Temporary bases
B. Permanent bases

Temporary bases:
 They are discarded after recording jaw relation, teeth arrangement
and try in is completed
Temporary record base materials are:
a. Shellac
b. Auto-polymerizing acrylic resin
c. Vacuum formed vinyl or polystyrene
d. Base plate wax
e. Cold cure acrylic resin
f. visible light cure acrylic resin
Permanent bases:
 They are not discarded but incorporated as part of final
restoration

 Materials used are:

 Heat cured acrylic resin

 Gold alloy

 Chrome nickel alloy

Shellac:

 It is thermoplastic material

 Available as pre shaped ,flat sheets

Adaptation:

 Cast is soaked in water to prevent shellac from sticking to cast

 A well adapted tinfoil may also be used

 Material is softened on Bunsen burner

 Adapted with wet fingers or wet cotton

 Adaptation started from the palate proceeding outward to ridge

crest
While the material is in a softened state,
the excess is removed with scissors

After hardening, the borders are

smoothed but as a rule will not take a
polish

Conti…
Advantages:

 Inexpensive and easily available

 Easy to use and adapt

Disadvantages:

 Brittle , can break easily

 Recording jaw relation becomes difficult if distorted and unstable

 Unstable or loose denture base is demoralizing to patient

Strengthening of shellac:

 Steel wire of 12 to 14 gauge is adapted across posterior palatal seal

area in maxillary base and along lingual flange in mandibular base
Auto polymerizing resin:

 Better strength

 Better stability to heat and dimensionally stability

Adaptation:

A. Non Flasking method

B. Flasking method

Non Flasking method:

 Self curing resin is mixed ,on reaching dough stage it is rolled

desired thickness 2-3 mm and adapted on the cast

 After being hardened ,record base is smoothened and polished

Flasking method:
 Master cast is duplicated and wax pattern is formed

 Pattern is then flasked and packing with auto polymerizing resin

 Resin is allowed to cure for 20 to 30 minutes

 Deflasked and finished

Advantage:

 More accurate and stable

Disadvantage:

 Time consuming and higher cost

Vacuum formed bases:

 Thermoplastic resin is heated in thermal vacuum machine and record

base is formed

Base plate wax:

 Base plate wax is softened over a flame and adapted over the cast

Advantages:

 Inexpensive

 Easy to form

Disadvantage:

 Lacks rigidity and dimensional stability

Advantages:

Good strength no need for reinforcement

Good dimensional stability
Does not wrap during manipulation
Closely fit to the master cast

Cold cure acrylic

resin
DISADVANTAGES:

Require more time in fabrication

Difficult to control the thickness
Residual monomer can cause irritation to
oral tissues

Conti…
Sprinkle on method

Finger adapted dough method

Flasking method

Stone mold method

Wax-confined method

METHODS
Any undercuts are relieved, and separating
medium is applied to the cast
Using an eye dropper apply the monomer
to the cast, carefully add the polymer (salt
and pepper technique) until a sufficient
thickness is gained over the entire surface
of the cast
The processed base is removed from the
cast, smoothed, and polished at the
borders

SPRINKLE ON METHOD
Any undercuts are relieved, and separating
medium is applied to the cast
The self curing resin is mixed according to
manufacturer instructions
When it reach the dough stage, it is molded
to the cast with instrument or fingers
It is allowed to polymerized completely
The processed base is removed from the
cast, smoothed, and polished at the borders

FINGER ADAPTED DOUGH

METHOD
A wax pattern is constructed over the cast
with a thickness and contour desired for
complete denture
• The cast and pattern are flasked, the wax is
eliminated, acrylic resin is packed and
allowed to set under the pressure of clamps or
press
• The processed base is removed from the
cast, smoothed, and polished at the borders

FLASKING METHOD
Any undercuts are relieved, and separating
medium is applied to the cast
Adapt a sheet of pink base plate material
to the cast by fingers and prevent trapping of
air
• Extend the material to the depth of vestibule
• Cure the record base for 4 minutes in the
light cure unit. Carefully removed from the
cast, invert and cure the tissue surface for 4
minutes

VISIBLE LIGHT CURED

ACRYLIC RESIN
The processed base is removed from the
cast, smoothed, and polished at the
borders

Conti…
Permanent bases:
Heat cured resin:
 Wax pattern of denture base is made on duplicate cast

 Processed with heat cured resin

Advantages:

 Rigid , accurate and dimensionally stable

 Better retention and stability

Disadvantages:

 Duplicate cast has to be made

 Time consuming and expensive

Cast alloy denture bases:
 Metal base is made by casting gold alloys or base metal alloys

 Artificial teeth are set in wax on denture base and replaced later
with resin

Advantages
 Add more weight to mandibular dentures

Good thermal conductivity ,so improved oral feelings and sensitivity

 Because of higher rigidity ,they can be made thin

 Can be given to patients who repeatedly break their dentures

Disadvantages:
Time consuming ,expensive
Definition:

“Occluding surfaces built on temporary or

permanent denture bases for the
purposes of making maxillomandibular
relation records and arranging teeth”

Occlusal rim
The position should be in the anticipated
position of the artificial teeth
It must be securely attached to the base
The occlusal surface must be smooth and
flat
It should be contoured to support the lip
and cheeks accurately
All the surfaces should be smooth

REQUIREMENTS
Uses:
 Determination of tooth support and facial esthetics

 Determination of plane of occlusion

 Aids in establishing teeth size and position

 Record and transfer jaw relations

 To see patient response to denture-like form

 Arrangement of artificial teeth

Fabrication of occlusal rims:

 Sheet of base plate wax is softened over Bunsen burner and rolled
into soft cylindrical shape

 Soft roll is adapted on to record base

 Wax is sealed to the base with hot spatula

 Ready made wax occlusion rims forms are available commercially

Shape of occlusal rim:

 Shape of occlusal rim would be same as the shape of arch
Position of occlusion rims:
 Occlusion rims usually occupies the same position as occupied by
natural teeth

 Posteriorly the rim is centered over the crest of ridge

 Anteriorly it is slightly labial to the crest

Inclines of lateral surfaces:

 Anteriorly the surface inclines outward or labialy

 Posteriorly it inclines inward

Width:
 Anteriorly, width is approximately 5mm

Posteriorly, it is 8 to 10 mm
Maxillary rim height:
 Anteriorly, height is 22mm

 Posteriorly it is about 18 mm

Mandibular rim height:

 Anteriorly, height of occlusion rim is 16mm

 Posteriorly , one half or two thirds the height of retro molar pad
