Engineering Mechanics II-

Dynamics

Introduction
What is dynamics?
 Dynamics is a course in engineering mechanics
which is concerned with the motion of bodies
under the action of forces.
 •Two distinct parts:
 Kinematics : study of motion without reference to
the forces that cause motion or are generated as a
result of motion
 Kinetics: relates the action of forces on bodies to
their resulting motions
What is Mechanics?
 Kinematics: Kinematics is defined as the study of the
geometry of motion without the consideration of the
cause that has produced the motion (mass or force).
 Kinetics: Kinetics is defined as the study of the geometry
of motion in consideration of the cause (mass and force)
due to which the motion is produced.

Systems of Units
• International System of Units (SI):
• Kinetic Units: length, time, mass, and The basic units are length, time, and mass
force. which are arbitrarily defined as the meter
(m), second (s), and kilogram (kg). Force
is the derived unit,
• Three of the kinetic units, referred to
as basic units, may be defined
arbitrarily. The fourth unit, referred
to as a derived unit, must have a
definition compatible with Newton’s
2nd Law,
