Introduction
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT): is a technique used commonly with renewable
energy (PV) systems to maximize power extraction under all operating conditions.
MPPT Techniques
Conventional methods:
Modern techniques:
• Fractional open circuit voltage
• Fractional short circuit current • Fuzzy logic controller
• Constant voltage • Artificial neural network
• Perturb and observe (P&O) • Model predictive control (MPC)
• Incremental conductance
Introduction
Steps of model predictive control
1- Define a cost function g.
2- Build a model of the converter and its possible switching states.
3- Build a model of the load for prediction.

P&O method: Operation is dependent on the change of power and change of voltage (Δp,
Δv).
Proposed MPPT
Modified P&O method: The operation is dependent on the change of power, change of
voltage, and change of current (Δp, Δv, Δi).
The change in current is included to avoid drift, where three cases are considered. Further,
constant power is enforced into the control.

Simulation results
MPPT using MPC is proposed in this paper, where the reference for the
MPC loop is modified to avoid the drift.
Constant power algoritm is combined with the MPPT function for flixble
operation.
