Constant Acceleration

Graphical Approach
Objectives:

• Compare graphical representations of

accelerated and non-accelerated motions.
Acceleration in a Velocity vs. Time Graph
Displacement in a Velocity vs. Time Graph
Position vs. Time Graph For
Constant Acceleration Motion

Acceleration is constant Acceleration is constant

and positive and negative
Problem 1:
A poorly tuned car accelerates from rest to a speed of 28 m/s
in 20 s, as represented in the velocity versus time graph
below.
a) Calculate the acceleration of the car.
b) Determine the displacement during this time.
Problem 2:
At t = 0 s a car has a speed of 30 m/s. After 6 s, its speed is
15 m/s, as represented in the velocity versus time graph
below.
a) Calculate the acceleration of the car.
b) Determine the displacement of the car during this time.
Problem 3:
A dog runs down his driveway with an initial speed of 5 m/s
for 8 s, then uniformly increases his speed to 10 m/s in 5 s,
as represented in the velocity versus time graph below.
a) Calculate the acceleration of the dog, during the 2nd part
of the motion.
b) Determine the total displacement of the dog.
