QUESTION 1
Show that f(x) = -x2 + 10x + 9 is increasing at x = 4.
F’(x) = -2x + 10
F’(4) = -2(4) +10
F’(4) = 2 > 0
This function is increasing at x = 4.
QUESTION 2A
Check whether y = Sin(x) is decreasing on ( π/2, π)
π = 1800
π/2 = 900
Y’(x) = cosx
Y’(π/2) = 0
Y’(π) = -1
This function is decreasing at (π/2, π)
QUESTION 2B
Check whether y = Sin(x) is increasing or decreasing on
(0, π/2)
π = 1800
π/2 = 900
Y’(x) = cosx
Y’(0) = 0
Y’(π/2) = -1
This function is decreasing at (0, π/2)
QUESTION 3
Find extreme values of f(x) = x4 - 8x2
SOLUTION F’’(x) = 12x2 – 16
f(x) = x4 - 8x2
F’(x) = 4x3 – 16x F’’(0) = -16 < 0 The function has max value at x =0
4x3 - 16x = 0 F’’(-2) = 32 > 0 The function has min value at x = -2
F’’(2) = 32 >0 The function has min value at x = 2
4x(x2 – 4) = 0
We know that a2 - b2 = (a + b)(a - b)
4x(x2 – 22) = 0
4x(x+2)(x-2)=0
Either 4x = 0, or (x+2) = 0, or (x-2) = 0
x = 0, x = -2, x = 2
QUESTION 4
Check whether f(x) = x2 + 5 is increasing at x = 3.
F’(x) = 2x
F(3) = 2(3) = 6 >0
The function is increasing at x = 3.
QUESTION 5
Find extreme values of f(x) = sinx + cosx on [0, 2π]
F’(x) = cosx – sinx x = 450 or pi / 4
F”(x) = -sinx - cosx Another value pi/4 + pi
For extreme values we put F’(X) = 0 tan(π/4 + π) = tan (5π/4) = 1
Cosx – sinx = 0 F”(π/4) = - sin(π/4) - cos(π/4)
Cosx = sinx F”(π/4) = - < 0 (Maximum Value)
Dividing both sides by cosx
F”(5π/4) = - sin(5π/4) - cos(5π/4)
Cosx/cosx = sinx/cosx
F”(5π/4) = > 0 (Minimum Value)
1 = tanx
F”(0) = - sin (0) – cos (0) = -1 (Max Value)
tanx =1
F”(2π) = - sin(2π) – cos(2π) = -1 (Max Value)
x =tan-1(1)
The given function has min value at 5π/4 and max value at 0, 2π, and π/4
