Lesson 10.

Types of Biomes
Objective
At the end describe the different
of the 1 types of biomes around
lesson, you the world.
should be
able to:
Learn about it!

Biomes
● Regions having similar climate, animals, and plants.

Coral reef as part of marine biome

Learn about it!

Biomes
● It is a community of plants
and animals that have
common characteristics for
the environment they exist
in.

Tropical rainforest as an
example of biome
Learn about it!

Classifications of Biomes
● Terrestrial biome

○ Grouped based on the

types of plants they
support and includes
tundra, grassland,
desert, and tropical
rainforest. Forest as an example of
terrestrial biome
Learn about it!

Classifications of Biomes
● Aquatic biome

○ Comprise almost 70% of

Earth’s surface and
contains the majority of
animal and plant species.

Coral reef as an example of

aquatic biome
Learn about it!

Tundra

● Coldest and harshest of all

biomes and also called as
treeless plain.

● Has permanently frozen soil

with an extremely cold and
windy climate.
Tundra
Learn about it!

Grasslands

● Widely distributed over

temperate regions.

● Covered with grasses that

tends to be tall in moist areas,
short in drier areas.

Grassland
Learn about it!

Savanna

● Rolling grassland with

shrubs and isolated
trees and has has both
dry and rainy seasons

● Can be found between a

tropical rainforest and Savanna
desert biome.
Learn about it!

Temperate Grasslands

● Differs from savanna in

terms of climate. Have hot
summers and cold winters.

● Rainfall is moderate and

receives less rainfall than
savanna
Temperate grassland
Learn about it!

Tropical Rainforest

● Receives the highest amount

of rainfall and has great water
availability results in great
diversity.

● Houses more that half of all the

plant and animal species in the
world. Tropical Rainforest
Learn about it!

Desert

● Considered as the driest

biome and exhibits drastic
temperature changes
between day and night.

● Found in Asia, Africa and

North America
Desert
Learn about it!

Marine Biome
● Includes oceans
characterized with very
high salinity.

● Serves as a home for

plants and animals of great
diversity

Organisms found in marine biome

Learn about it!

Freshwater Biome
● Consists of lakes, rivers,
and streams with
minimal salinity.

● Characterized by still
waters where animals
and plants have adapted
to float on the surface. Pond as example of freshwater biome
Key Points

Biomes are regions having similar climate, animals,

1 and plants on earth.

Terrestrial biome are grouped based on the types of

2 plants they support.

Aquatic biomes contain the majority of animal and

3 plant life.
Check Your Understanding

Identify the following concepts being described.

1. A community of organisms living together and
interacting with the nonliving components.
2. It is the living component of an ecosystem.
3. It is the non-living component of an ecosystem.
4. It refers to organisms that can produce their own
food through the process of photosynthesis.
5. An abiotic factor that refers to the acidity and
alkalinity of a habitat.
Challenge Yourself

How is an ecosystem
different from a
community?
