A2B3 type compounds
 The term “A2B3 crystal” typically refers to a specific type of crystal structure
in solid-state chemistry or materials science.
 In this context, “A” and “B” represent two different types of atoms or ions, and
the subscript numbers indicate the ratio at which they combine in the crystal
lattice.
 “A” and “B” Elements/Ions: “A” and “B” represent distinct elements or ions
within the crystal structure. These elements can be chosen from the periodic
table or from specific compounds.
 Subscripts “2” and “3”: The subscripts “2” and “3” indicate the ratio at which
the “A” and “B” elements combine. In this case, for every 2 “A” elements,
there are 3 “B” elements in the crystal structure.
1) Cr2O3
 The crystal structure of Cr2O3, or chromium(III) oxide, is known as
corundum structure.
 In this arrangement, the chromium atoms (Cr) are surrounded by six oxygen
(O) atoms, and each oxygen atom is coordinated with three chromium atoms.
 This structure is also referred to as a rhombohedral lattice, which means it has
a trigonal symmetry.
 The corundum structure is commonly found in various compounds, including
certain oxides and minerals.
 It’s worth noting that corundum is also the crystal structure of the precious
gemstone ruby.
2) Bi2O3
 Bismuth(III) oxide, also known as bismuth trioxide or Bi2O3, has a
rhombohedral crystal lattice structure.
 This means that its atoms are arranged in a repeating pattern that forms a
rhombohedral unit cell.
 This means that its unit cell is not a cube, but a rhombohedron, which is a six-
sided figure with all sides of equal length.
 Each unit cell contains multiple bismuth and oxygen atoms arranged in a
specific geometric configuration.
 Bi2O3 thin films have a wide range of applications such as transparent
electronics , solar cells , supercapacitor, ultraviolet (UV) photodetector and
sunlight-driven photocatalysts
AB3 type compounds

 The crystal of formula AB3 has A ions at the corners of the cube and
B ions at the edge centers.
 The crystal structure of AB3 is called a perovskite structure.
 In this structure, the A ions occupy the vertices of the cube, and the
B ions occupy the centers of the edges of the cube.
 ReO3, Li3N, Li3Bi are example of such type of compounds.
1) ReO3
 ReO3 forms crystals with a primitive cubic unit cell.
 The structure of ReO3 is similar to the perovskite structure without the
large A cation at the centre of the unit cell.
 Each rhenium atom is surrounded by an octahedron of six oxygen centers.
 The coordination number of O is 2 because each oxygen atom has 2
neighbouring Re atoms.
 It is a red solid with a metallic lustre that resembles copper in appearance.
 It is the only stable trioxide of the Group 7 elements (Mn, Tc, Re).
2) Li3N
Li3N, or lithium nitride, is an ionic compound composed of lithium (Li) and
nitrogen (N) ions. It forms a crystal lattice structure based on the arrangement of
these ions.
In the crystal lattice of Li3N, lithium ions (Li+) are smaller than nitride ions
(N3-). The lithium ions are arranged in a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure,
which means they form a cube with an atom at each corner and one in the center
of each face.
 The larger nitride ions fit into the spaces between the smaller lithium ions.
This arrangement allows for a stable structure where the opposite charges of
the ions are attracted to each other, forming a solid crystal lattice.
